Nick_S Posted February 13, 2013 Share #1 Posted February 13, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having seen news items about televisions with 4000 vertical lines. How long before we will see decent computer monitors that can show full resolution images from an M digital camera - is there anything in the pipeline? It would be nice to view and manipulate full images in all their glory. At the moment, the largest NEC spectraview monitor currently has 1600 lines in a 30" diagonal monitor and the Eizo ColorEdge range reaches 1440 lines in a 27" monitor. Advertisement Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Hi Nick_S, Take a look here 4k monitors, when?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Paul J Posted February 13, 2013 Share #2 Posted February 13, 2013 It seems there is a need for it now and one that is growing incredib;y quickly. Also, as Apple have been flying the flag of "retina" displays it will be in the consumers thoughts, expectations and demands to increase resolution with every new model. Personally I would like to see larger monitors at a decent res that are financially viable. I like to retouch images at full size. I find it helps to see the image in context so I would like to see a 40-50inch monitor of decent res.
dpitt Posted February 14, 2013 Share #3 Posted February 14, 2013 Apple Cinema display 30" was 2560x1600 if you can find it second hand. Current Apple Cinema display 27" is 2560x1440 Other manufacturers still have to discover the world of high resolution. Lots of graphic cards do still not support the apple 30" resolution. Check before you buy it.
Nick_S Posted February 14, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted February 14, 2013 Apple seem to have taken the lead in introducing higher pixel densities. Perhaps they will extend the technology in their Retina displays to separate monitors (no need for another laptop, here). I would like to see higher pixel densities that approximate the printed page, rather than just larger and larger displays at 100dpi. Nick

JDFlood Posted February 16, 2013 Share #11 Posted February 16, 2013 Sharp and Another company is making one, I think it will be out in 2 or three months. I'm not sure, but I think it's cost will be in the low thousands... No tens. I can't wait to turn in my dual 32" 2,564 by 1,900 for 4k. I'm sure for monitors they will make 5k also. JD There are a lot of companies with 4k and close to 4k monitors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4K_resolution Off topic: 4k projectors for commercial theater have been around for a while and 4k for home theater is just starting now with Sony making a nice projector for $25k and others like JVC in the under $9k. The JVC uses a technology that is called wobblation where the mirrors are moved quickly to project twice as many pixels on the screen to get a better fill factor and more pixels. JVC's approach is not true 4K but it is an improvements. Red, is trying to pair their 4k camera with a 4k player and a content delivery site that for the time being only independent film companies would sign up for. Right now their is not any 4k material to watch only upscaled 2k stuff which looks pretty good on home 4k home projectors. Some demo material exists on hard drives. Sony studio has their own plan to deliver 4k content from their movie studio but, I think the electronics part of that company and the studio side are not on the same page yet concerning letting 4k movie material out for the private home market. All of this will drive 4k monitors to us sooner than later.
