M8 coffee stained for sale

I was scared to death about having a shutter failure while using my M8. Leica would have no regrets charging me 1000 Euro for the repair. After that my M8 would still be worth around 1500 euro.

Now it developed the coffee stain issue. In itself this defect does not interfere with normal use. Leica apologises and offers me a 'forced' upgrade to M9. I do pay 1600 Euro which is more than I would have payed for the shutter, but the value of my digital body increased to about 4000 euro. So I make about 900 euro profit on the deal!

If you look at it that way my M8 with coffee stain was worth about about 2500 Euro before I had it repaired!

This is only temporary of course, because I was lucky to fall in the first category of exchange deals. If it was one year older the math would be about break even...

This proves that Leica is a good brand to invest in. In the long run it looses less value than the other brands. If you are lucky you can even have no loss at all.

And of course you get more pleasure using it than any other camera I know.

Not to rain on your parade but you've lost your M8 in the trade so if its sound value was 2500 EUR before the coffee stain issue, as you suggest, the latter did cost you 2500 + 1600 for the upgrade = 4100 EUR. Still a fair price for a demo M9 with 2 years Leica warranty though.

I think 2500 euros for a used M8 (coffee stain or not) is very optimistic, especially if the M8 is over two years old (Leica will exchange your faulty M8 for an M9 free of charge if the M8 is less than 2 years old).

Once an M8 is over 2 years old there is a minimum charge of 1500 euros, so at the very best, the buyer of your used M8 (at 2500 euros) would be paying 4000 euros for an exchange M9.

Some dealers are selling ex demo M9s for that price, and the advantage of buying from them, is that you don't have the uncertainty of leica's decision making process, which has shown some inconsistency, nor have to wait for the decision.
