philipus Posted January 21, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) There's a Telyt 280/4.8 at the Swedish ebay site which is listed as a "Leica Leitz Canada 280mm f 4.8 Telyt V". Based on its serial number - 1850640 - the Wiki has this as a version I but the photo in that entry doesn't look like the one being sold. I'm probably just missing something here but could anyone help me identify this lens? Cheers

jc_braconi Posted January 21, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 21, 2013 It is a Vs II no doubt about you can have some about the listings that are around.
jaapv Posted January 21, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 21, 2013 Try and get a series III if possible - a considerably better lens.
philipus Posted January 21, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted January 21, 2013 Thank you very much for your replies. The number, though, belongs to a v1 - isn't that strange? Or is the lens head removable? Or is the Wiki serial number list incorrect?
Michael Geschlecht Posted January 22, 2013 Share #5 Posted January 22, 2013 Hello Philip, Possibly: As with most of the rest of the manufacturing World: Sometimes Leitz/Leica serial numbers can reflect an anomoly in production. Examples: Lens #2279578 is a chrome 50mm Rigid Summicron, first version rigid knurling, screw mount. Body # 825001 is a chrome IIg. IIIg = has rangefinder, has viewfinder, has high speeds, has slow speeds IIg = has rangefinder, has viewfinder, has high speeds, no slow speeds Ig = no rangefinder, no viewfinder, has high speeds, has slow speeds Best Regards, Michael
luigi bertolotti Posted January 22, 2013 Share #6 Posted January 22, 2013 Is a version 2, definitely : the s/n must be taken always with a certain degree of aproximation, and moreover for items like these, made in small numbers and from the Canada factory (which had to "accord" its numbers with the Wetzlar ones). I haven't ever known EXACTLY how many 280 V 1 were made, but I suspect they were very few... they were modified to V 2 practically in the same year of availability of V 1, and was not a "mass lens" : I suppose that from a certain number belonging to the first allocated batch 1850001 - 1851000 they started producing the V 2 (is rather absurd that a lens with a mechanically complex mount would be produced in 2 versions intermixed... unless they had spares....) and what I do know by sure is that 1850223 IS a version 1, but 1850393 IS a version 2 (and I wait to see a V 1 over 393 to have my reasoning disrupted... )

tobey bilek Posted January 25, 2013 Share #8 Posted January 25, 2013 It is a version 2 that focuses to around 20 feet. 3 is a larger lens that focuses much closer. I could never see a difference in optics. 2 works fine if you add extention tubes
