Card Reader Recommendations?

My M8 is on the way back to Solms for replacement and this time I am starting from scratch in order to eliminate as many variables as possible that may have been the cause of three shutdown failures. I am ordering some Transcend sd cards, as they seem to working well for people here. What I would like some advice on is what brand/model of card reader should I pick up? I would prefer to stay with a multi-card reader as I will still have to use my Canons with their Compact Flash cards.

Brent, I am using a Sandisk Imagemate 12-in-1. Others here have recommended a 5-in-1.

What I noticed when I went to it was the speed, and apparently it's the fact that it's a usb 2.0 device. It's about 10 times faster than the reader in my cpu!

It was $40 and is reasonably small. Recommended.

I also have no problems with the 5-1 Sandisk (Intel Mac).

However, I've recently moved to using ExpressCard in my MacBook Pro (e.g., this one). Mine's an SD only and then I use the Sandisk or another smaller reader for CF cards. It mounts flush in my Macbook Pro's ExpressCard slot which means I can just leave it in there all the time. Doesn't really solve the CF+SD problem, but at least I know I have one of them all the time so long as I have my laptop.

Don't bother with a card reader at all, I use the Sandisk II which snap in half and can be plugged directly into the USB port. I have 3 2Gb cards and they are a lot more handy than having to bring a card reader along with the laptop. I don't think they are any more expensive than the std Sandisk II's.

it's just a thought :)

I have been using a multi-card reader by Transcend for the SD cards on my Macs, and it is fast on the USB 2 High Speed, compared to many others.

Amazon.com: Transcend Portable Multi-Card Reader - Card reader ( CF I, CF II, MS, MS PRO, Microdrive, MMC, SD, MS Duo, xD, MS PRO Duo, miniSD, MMCplus ) - Hi-Speed USB: Electronics

I still prefer the older Lexar Firewire CF card reader for the CF cards, as it is very compact and still very fast.

I use two ExpressCard readers – one for SD, one for CF – with my MacBook Pro. Small, no cables, no hassle. They're both branded as Hama, but possibly the same as the Belkin one ibogost uses. Other than that I've had and used one of those SanDisk USB multi-format readers for the past couple of years. Worked well, too. I use SanDisk Ultra II and Extreme III cards, both CF and SD.

It looks good that one. Maybe I'll get one too. Does it support SDHC?

I can't find the answer to that, Carsten. I don't have any of the HC cards because it was my understanding they are not compatible with the M8.

The Sandisk Imagemate 12-in-1 has been a mixed bag for me: It mostly works well enough, with the combo xD/Smartmedia slot being a pain, as it's not real obvious which way is "up". The silvery painted finish comes pre-scuffed right out of the package, and with a bit of use, looks more beat-up than I would've expected. It does claim SDHC compatibility though.
