CalArts 99 Posted January 22, 2013 Share #64 Posted January 22, 2013 fwiw, I emailed Leica. I mentioned that my dealer said it was made in Portugal and final assembly was done in Germany. I can't copy and paste the actual response since it says on the return email that it's not permissible to forward it. But I assume that I can at the very least paraphrase it. The individual replied to say that they looked at the X2 and it said 'Made in Germany' on the bottom label. And that is how it should be understood. Somewhat of a coy response, imho. bill Posted January 23, 2013 Share #65 Posted January 23, 2013 That's a bit like asking a fox if you should lock the flap on your henhouse. If you expect to sell more units to the gullible by encouraging them to believe that the camera is made in Germany, what are you going to do...? By the way, when you say you emailed "Leica" do you mean Leica AG or Leica in the US? Storm in a teacup. Regards, Bill

It was Leica NJ. I went through the main Leica website and selected 'country' and then 'technical questions' etc... Someone could try Leica AG and see what they say. They'll probably say the same thing but in German instead of English

Digitom Posted January 26, 2013 Share #68 Posted January 26, 2013 I don´t know how it is handled and law in other countries, but if a company prints "Made in Germany" I heard about that 60% of the parts and the final assembly has to be made in Germany. Leica has a factory in Portugal, and the M housings are made there, and some electronic components are pre installed there. But the final workings are made in Solms, as everyone can see if he visits Leica there. So sure there is no doubt about that M´s are made in Germany. On the opposite, if there is a label "Made in Germany" on X-Cameras, sure it is made here (in Germany). And also it is sure not every screw is made in Germany, because we live in the year 2013; means in a globalised world. The "Oberlandes-Gericht Stuttgart" (higher regional court in city Stuttgart) told us in November 1995 about "Made in Germany" (translation with some help of google, sorry if not very clear ): "The words "Germany" in the sense of "Made in Germany" is misleading in the case when several essential parts of a device come from abroad. However, this does not apply when the services have been performed in Germany, which are essential for those characteristics of the product that are available for the appreciation of the goods in the foreground." And finally, please just talk about FACTS here, and do not make SPECULATIONS (or just point out if you speculate).
earleygallery Posted January 26, 2013 Share #69 Posted January 26, 2013 And finally, please just talk about FACTS here, and do not make SPECULATIONS (or just point out if you speculate). Well, you are speculating with your figure of 60% aren't you? I'd put it at nearer 99% (what part of the X1/2 do you KNOW was manufactured in Germany?). The camera is assembled in Germany, we know that is fact.
andystac Posted January 27, 2013 Share #70 Posted January 27, 2013 Conspiracy theory #34... If it was actually made in Germany shouldn't it say "hergestellt in Deutschland"!!!!:)
SJP Posted January 27, 2013 Share #71 Posted January 27, 2013 Conspiracy theory #34... If it was actually made in Germany shouldn't it say "hergestellt in Deutschland"!!!!:)Indeed, but s38 seems to have disappeared. Anyway, I can confirm that the X1 (yes I bought one second hand recently for my wife) is a pretty impressive device, especially the lens is actually as good as I have seen. Wherever it is made physically, it was certainly made by Leica mentally.
