hi all,

I am on hte lookout for a 90mm lens for my IIf and IIIf cameras.

It should be as compact and light as possible but with good performance.

Am I right in thinking the 90/4 Elmar is the one to go for.If so any versions I should avoid or prefer?

thanks in advance

andy

Yes, the f/4 90mm Elmar is the best choice. One compatibility issue, early 90mm Elmars take A36 hoods and filters the later ones take E39 fittings and hoods. You may wish to ensure compatibility with any existing lenses of other focal lengths or consider future needs before purchase.

Andy, I bought an Elmar 9cm f4 (Ser no. 14828xx) just over a year ago (from Leica Shop, Wien) and have been very impressed with it's performance. Below is an example from it on my IIIg. Some months after buying it, I came across an adaptor that lets me use it on my M9, where it also gives exceedingly good results.

Andy - mine is a 1957 version according to the Leica WiKi. Presumably therefore it is coated.

PS - see this thread for an example on the M9 and a further IIIg example.

The 3-element, isn't that more of a collectible these days?

I have an older one which I believe is uncoated (here) and it works great. These Elmars are among the least expensive LTM lenses out there so provided one finds a copy in good optical and cosmetic condition they're really good value. Mine may not be the sharpest wide open but stopped down just a bit it is quite capable.

Thanks Keith and JC..

Now I will start to search for one....that 3 Element one seems to be quite rare!

If you know any good sources do let me know.

Yes, the 3 elements Elmar is very uncommon in the Screw Mount version (in bayonet mount is rather easy to find, though, of course, not common as the classic 4 elements versions) : I'd suggest, as a user item. to find a 4 elements with good glass and coating... always a pleasant lens to use.

Anyway, give a look to this very good Italian dealer, who at the moment has a good choice of 90mm in LTM (including a "3 elements"): http://www.newoldcamera.com/Prodotti.aspx?Marca=LEICA-V&Tipo=OB

I have the 9cm f4 in bayonet mount for my M2. I used to have a screw mount version but I got frustrated with using it on the lllf due to parralax error (you definately need one of those turret Leica viewfinders with parralax correction).

It's a lovely light and compact lens and I think you will be surprised by the results. I would try to find a later coated version, as clean as you can. They're dirt cheap by Leica standards.

I forgot to mention that for my Leica II I have the VIOOH. However having tested a bit I've come to realise that the rangefinder window almost corresponds to the 9cm view. It is 1.5x magnification so should cover approximately 75mm. Of course, there's no parallax correction but having seen how the VIOOH compensates for parallax at different distances, I have learnt to use the lens without the VIOOH attached, which I do when I want the lightest possible kit.

Very beautiful collection.....do you have the latest also.....the all black C ?

Although the C is very nice with beautiful coatings, it is hard to find the right filter for it I guess...

Yes You can see it in my web site at the CL page, and not include on this old pict is the "Fat" one.

Filters are 5.5 and I use an adapter for UV/IR on the 40 Summicron/M8.

I will be travaeeling for a couple of days to Moscow next week and intend to use it there, so hope to post my fiest efforts very soon.

Thanks again to all for the advice.

Best Andy

Could not wait for my trip so loaded up with Delta 100 and went for a walk with my boy.

Am very pleased at the lens performance...and handling.

Very light, seems to have excellent contrast and sharpness.

What a joy!!

Here a couple from the roll.
