andyedward Posted December 20, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sony RX1 Review I had been waiting for Michael Reichmann's review of the RX1 as I believe his camera reviews are the best on the web. His review is favourable, which makes me think that given its price, the RX1 is a viable 35mm lens alternative to the M system. Indeed, if I were considering purchasing a digital camera to use alongside my MP, I would certainly hire an RX1 for a week

His review is favourable, which makes me think that given its price, the RX1 is a viable 35mm lens alternative to the M system. Indeed, if I were considering purchasing a digital camera to use alongside my MP, I would certainly hire an RX1 for a week $2800 without a viewfinder...once you figure that in....it's well over $3k. No thanks! i'd rather buy an M8 and a 40mm Summicron for $2500 and make a run for it. i think the RX1 is a cool camera....but it just doesn't sit well with me when looked at overall. Its experience is likely to be mundane like any other point and shoot....except it is hiding a full frame sensor within. For me, photography is 70% about the experience....which often leads to the 30% of the photo and the quality! If i were a pro, i'd likely think differently. I so wanted to get the RX1 but still have not. Its not so much the fixed lens, but lack pf inbuilt evf/ovf that is bugging me as its one more thing to carry/lose. Hopefully the M240 will arrive soon and i will no longer be distracted/look at the RX1 :-)
lct Posted December 20, 2012 Share #4 Posted December 20, 2012 One would have to put a 28/2 on the M8 to do the comparo and this combo would be significantly more expensive and bulky then. Pity that this little Sony has not a rangefinder and interchangeable lenses, it could become the digital CL of my dreams. I would be tempted if it had a built-in EVF perhaps... Nice move from Sony anyway.

Joe S Posted December 20, 2012 Share #6 Posted December 20, 2012 Nice as the RX1 is it isn't the camera for me either, but there can be no doubt that Sony has become the most innovative manufacturer offering one great new and interesting camera after another. Combine that with the best sensors anywhere and the future looks very bright.

Yes, I know it has an OVF but it can't be used with R lenses to focus. You then must use the LCD or the EVF just like the RX1 for MF but in AF you could get by with no EVF and the LCD turned off as long as you had the focus confirmation beep on. Yes, I know it has an OVF but it can't be used with R lenses to focus. The large majority of those buying the new M won’t even have R lenses. You can add an electronic viewfinder but by no means do you have to. With the RX1, on the other hand, it is a matter of either holding it at arm’s length or adding an external viewfinder. No thanks! i'd rather buy an M8 and a 40mm Summicron for $2500 and make a run for it. Why on earth would you buy an M8? A 5d2 will destroy it, and cost less, and you can use R lenses. You can still buy a new 5d2. You can't buy a new M8... and you shouldn't even if you can. ... and in most cases, the only reason M lenses cost more is because of silly people that buy cameras to be seen wearing them... and that drives up the price because they are "fashion boys". There is absolutely NO WAY a used M8 is worth 2 grand. You'd have to be an idiot to pay that. Ridiculous.

Photography for me is not about the megapixels and technical details. It is about the experience and the enjoyment. It is quite sad when people evaluate hobbies and gear based upon only objective criteria. Then again, people who do that take rubbish photos...so whatever! It's about M lenses....i don't really have any care/need to use R lenses. A used Corvette is faster than a used Maserati coupe.....both can be attained for the same price. I'd have the Maserati.....you can keep your rubbish Corvette! The M8 is a fantastic camera....fortunately that doesn't depend upon your opinions. It's about using a Rangefinder...it's about the build quality and the experience. Time to learn what you enjoy rather than what you can compare technical details of. You'd have to be an idiot to pay that... Another idiot here Funny that we may have so different opinions. To me the IQ of my M8.2 is miles ahead that of the 5D2. It's not that i dislike Canon, as i use a 5D1 for my R lenses. But i much prefer the digital noise of the latter to the plasticky look of 5D2 images. Horses for courses as usual. sfage Posted December 21, 2012 Share #15 Posted December 21, 2012 Wel... I dunno man. The images work well upon my 24 inch printer... and I just sold one of my (as you put it) "plastic" prints. I'll take the 700€ and you can keep your M8. Okies! PS: please "do" call me an idiot. That 700€ just paid for my Christmas in Switzerland I love you too baby. Also, I don't care about the digital noise you brought up. I shoot at 160, (or 320) everything is tickety boo.

Time to learn what you enjoy rather than what you can compare technical details of. To quote you: "LOL. no." It's about what goes upon the paper. I couldn't care less if you use a rangefinder. It's about the photographs. ... unless you can think of a sales angle that will make a client get their cheque book out *faster* "just because" you used a rangefinder. Dude, It's not all about the money. But if it is for you, thats fine. I have printed 44"x44" from my M8 and was satisfied enough to not bother upgrading to the M9, i will however have the M240 :-) Am not interested in DSLR at all, if it works for you, thats great. Back to RX1, they say that the best camera is the one that you have on you at the time, which for me, is mostly my phone, held at arms length. Arguing with myself here really as i am trying not to buy one, buy one, not to buy one..... :-)
Lightwrangler Posted December 21, 2012 Share #19 Posted December 21, 2012 That 700€ just paid for my Christmas in Switzerland 700 for christmas in switzerland? What switzerland is that?
