omega1848 Posted December 13, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, is anyone using the Leica SF 58 Flash? I was wondering if this flash has an external sync connector/ socket (mini) to connect Pocket Wizard or other radio remote trigger to the flash. Unfortunately the manual does not state anything and the only connector I can see on the pictures are the mini-USB one (for potential upgrade of the firmware of the flash, but has that really happened in the past???). It would be a real bummer if the flash has none and you would need to use a clumpsy flash hot shoe adapter for that! Thanks!

Luke_Miller Posted December 13, 2012 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2012 No connections on my SF-58 other than USB and for the external battery pack. I think the hot shoe adapter is the only choice.
omega1848 Posted December 13, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted December 13, 2012 Thanks a lot Luke for your help and for double checking! ( Damn, what a piece of crab that flash is, spending a fortunate on this and no simple jack, really any other flash has such a connection, oh well...) Anyone has some really good recommendations for such a hot shoe adapter? The one from "Kaiser" is simply a joke and very poorly made, and if I really will buy a SF 58 I don't want to ruin it within seconds just because of that a bad made adapter... NikonJeff Posted December 13, 2012 Share #4 Posted December 13, 2012 I did see a couple of adapters on eBay, but I don't have any experience with it. Looks interesting as is appears that the adapter has pass-through connections to keep Nikon i-TTL and adds a PC synch socket as well. Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for but it should work... Luke_Miller Posted December 13, 2012 Share #5 Posted December 13, 2012 If you don't already have the SF-58 you may have other choices for a Pocket Wizard triggered remote flash. Older Nikon flashes such as the SB-25 have the PC connection and work perfectly fine as remote flashes in manual mode. They will also work fine in manual or Auto mode on the Leica bodies. omega1848 Posted December 13, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted December 13, 2012 Yes, that was my thinking as well. However I my idea was to use the SF 58 with full feature set (of course only mounted directly to the M9 or via sync cable), and time by time as remote flash on a stand with umbrella, reflector, etc. Obviously I was not expecting to have full TTL Sync Communication (like with a cable or via direct mounting) over wireless (like you can have with some Pocket Wizards (and others) for Nikon or Canon). Well, then I really need to make up my mind if I need a SF 58 at all, I am not sure about the full advantages (in other words feature set) using a SF 58 on a Leica M9 vs. any good 3rd party automatic/ manual flash... If I remember correctly the Metz "brother" of the SF 58 has less optimized support for the Leica and does not work so well, even in automatic mode.
