gmpphotography Posted December 4, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently found out about what must be one of the rarest Leicas ever, a Leica M2-250. It is a standard M2, however converted to accept long roll film for 250 exposures. The conversion incorporates the Camcraft N-5 motor, the rights to which were later obtained by Leitz and the motor was sold as the so called NY Motor. I contacted Andy for permission to post a link to the article I wrote about the M2-250 on my own blog. So far, I am still waiting patiently for an answer. Meanwhile, please contact me privately for a link to the article.

luigi bertolotti Posted December 5, 2012 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2012 Yes : I remember it was a Goldberg design, carried on "privately", to say without official endorsement from Leitz (differently from his motor, which Leitz adopted officially). So it's by sure a very rare and intriguing item, but in strict terms cannot be regarded as a Leitz product, and not even a Leitz prototype.
luigi bertolotti Posted December 5, 2012 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2012 Sorry gm... ... I see you know well the story : I have just seen your article, which is easy to find on the net googling "Leica M2 250"...
sabears Posted December 5, 2012 Share #5 Posted December 5, 2012 Nice story and interesting customization, unfortunately it is not an original product so we can not call it a rare leica. cheers.
gmpphotography Posted December 5, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted December 5, 2012 Sorry gm... ... I see you know well the story : I have just seen your article, which is easy to find on the net googling "Leica M2 250"... Thanks for making the effort to find the article. I agree with the other posters here that stated that the camera is a private customization. However, since it was not just done by anybody, and since it does have a direct Leica connection via the N-5 motor, I feel that it does have a somewhat special place among the non Leica sanctioned rarities. luigi bertolotti Posted December 5, 2012 Share #9 Posted December 5, 2012 The story is really interesting, and exciting too that DAG is well disposed to sell this special.... But, Heinz, let me say that one of the most astonishing info in your blog is that you had your first Leica at 5 YEARS AGE !!! This ought to be a real absolute record... I think that none of us, so proud of our long relationship with Leica, can show off such a primacy... I was 15 when heard the Leica name for the first time... I never thought of getting my first Leica when I was 5 as a record. I am just glad to have had a Leica relationship for that long. However, the mystique of the Leica came to me a lot later. But I am glad to say that since that 5th birthday I have never been without a Leica in my possession.
TomB_tx Posted December 5, 2012 Share #11 Posted December 5, 2012 Thanks for the link. I used to enjoy Norman Goldberg's tech columns in the magazines back when he was writing, and I've used Don for repairs on several cameras. Yet I never realized he was Norman's son. Must be good genes.
gmpphotography Posted December 6, 2012 Author Share #12 Posted December 6, 2012 Thanks for the link. I used to enjoy Norman Goldberg's tech columns in the magazines back when he was writing, and I've used Don for repairs on several cameras. Yet I never realized he was Norman's son. Must be good genes. I too used to read Norman Goldberg's columns on a regular basis. I also have known Don ever since he opened his own business in 1980. I got to know him through Jim Kuehl, the local Leica rep at the time.
