markvm Posted March 20, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) My name is Mark and i am getting an M8 and would like some opinions concerning the Leica Wide Angle 35mm f/2.0 Summicron. How does it compare with other lenses of the same focal length? I appreciate any opinions you may have. Â Mark

Shootist Posted March 20, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 20, 2007 I have one the new 35 f/2 ASPH lenses and it is very good. Never tried any other lenses in this focal length so I son't have any comparisons for you. Some say the Zeiss is a very good lens but it does not come with a hood, hood cap or case and it is not a Leica.
earleygallery Posted March 20, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 20, 2007 I've only heard great things said about the ASPH Summicron. If funds allow then go for it. The Voigtlanders are also said to be very good performers for the price and sitting inbetween is the Zeiss (in terms of price - don't know about performance but I suspect it also falls in the middle). Â Don't forget the crop factor on an M8, this will be equivalent to 47mm focal length.
roubaix Posted March 20, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Mark, Â Welcome. I am a beginner as well and started precisely as you are considering with a 35 cron 2.0. I love the lens. I can't compare it to others in the range since I don't have any! But I will say that I don't regret it for a moment. I was a Leica virgin until my first date with the M8 about 10 weeks ago and I am continually astounded at how fabulous an image one can capture with this setup. On the other hand it is still 90% the photographer since I can't begin to get anywhere near the level of those on this forum such as Guy, Jaap (love your stuff), and others. Back to the lens. Â Had I the funds, I may have gone down to the 21 or WATE, since it always seems as though I want just a little more in the field. But, still, a "neutral 50" seems and ideal lens for the bag regardless. I did buckle and buy a CV15 to scatch this itch (should arrive tomorrow.) Â For the money, I don't see hoew you can beat the 35 cron 2.0 as a first, general purpose lens. However, be warned, the urge to buy more starts fast... Â Good luck, Â Peter
jaapv Posted March 20, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 20, 2007 I suppose you mean the asph version - that is industry standard good, hard to imagine a better lens, it certainly is not currently on the market. Top of the line. Having said that, the older pre-asph versions are very good lenses in their own right. Maybe a bit softer in contrast, slightly less agressive sharpness, bit still very desirable. Even the venerable Summaron 2.8/35 is a good lens still. You cannot go wrong.
fotografr Posted March 20, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 20, 2007 It is an outstanding lens. I also have the 35 lux (pre-ASPH) and the 35 cron ASPH is considerably sharper and has better contrast and color rendition. On the brief occasions when I have had a functional M8, that has been my standard, carry-around lens.
wparsonsgisnet Posted March 20, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mark, welcome. Â I carry the 35 'lux asph as my regular lens on the M8. Â I previously owned the non-asph version and found it very flare-prone. I would read the same into Brent's comment, above. The flare in the non-asph version rendered the images with inadequate color saturation and clarity. Â If it's in the budget, get the asph version. This, like all the other Leica lenses you are preparing to add to your inventory, will be used for decades. Â What's a few extra bucks. Go ahead, get all the lenses that Guy Mancuso has! By your 3rd or 4th post, you'll have seen images from dozens of his lenses. We should all be able to do lighting like he does.
AlanJW Posted March 20, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Mark, I have the 35mm f/2 ASPH and will echo all the other comments. It has excellent sharpness and contrast; I consider it my "normal" lens on the M8, and it is the lens I use most often (perhaps until I get my WATE).
