I contacted him once years ago but he was somewhat evasive. Of course, this could be the car of the local rep (if there is such a thing - I was just told that Switzerland is a bigger Leica market than all of South America, so I doubt South Africa can be that significant). And of course there are differing parts of Leica - binocs, instruments and photo. You can narrow ordinary Cape plates down by the issuing office prefix (CA is Cape Town, CY northern suburbs, etc.) but all the vanity plates get the WP. Peter Branch Posted March 20, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted March 20, 2007 Several issues raised in this thread. 1) Yes it was with an M8, 1/15 sec at f1 with 50mm Noctilux and 1250 ISO, DNG. It is a very dimly lit car park and the picture makes it look much brighter than it actually was. The colours are all over the place, partly because of the mixed lighting and partly due to IR, I don't have any IR filters yet. It is the best compromise under the circumstances. 2) The location is outside The Castle Hotel, Cape Town, on 17th Feb. '07 at 21:28 local time. Corner of Canterbury Street and Constitution near district 6. Excellent Portuguese based restaurant. 3) It may be true that sales of cameras in South Africa are minimal, I suspect they are, but the Leica shop in Cape Town had the largest display of binoculars I have seen anywhere. I guess that is no surprise given the location. 4) I was told that the car, an Audi A4, belongs to the Finance Director of the Company that has the Leica Import Agency for South Africa - but I have no idea if this is true. andit Posted March 21, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 21, 2007 Hi Everyone, Great to see that people are visiting South Africa. Just a couple of things that have been mentioned in this site. WP stands for Western Province. There is an abbreviation MP in this country and means Mpumalanga Provice. For people who have been to SA, that is the province that surrounds the southern part of the Kruger National Park, and is home to some of the most spectacular sights in SA (Blyde River Canyon, Gods Window, numerous waterfalls, the Kruger National Park and Sabie Sands Nature Reserve just to mention a few). I have the feeling that this car belongs to a man named Stephen Katzef. He is the Leica agent in South Africa. Leica's camera sales are very small, binoculars do very well, with their main lines being surveying equipment and medical equipment. As for Peter, I'm really glad that you still have your M8. That part of Cape Town is one of the "not-so-good" parts of the city. But then 12 tourists have been attacked, stabbed and robbed in the Kirstenbosh Botanical Gardens during the first 10 weeks of this year alone. Andreas You must be working for Australian Tourism :-) AFAIK, only two tourists were stabbed, and they fought back (never recommended). Note their attack was outside the Kirstenbosch Gardens. IOL: British tourists stabbed on Table Mountain Considering the number of tourists in CT every year, and the obvious disparity between the rich and poor in this city of 4.5 million +, I am amazed that crime isn't worse. OTOH, it is wise to keep in mind that SA is in the top five for murders per capita in the world.
