My 'New' old 111f - it's a reality!

Erl, you too! Ever since Copenhagen, I've been thinking about picking up an old II/III and I don't know why! Perhaps it was becomes compared to Robert's O it looked modern. I got into Leica because I loved my old film cameras and now it is taking me back to even older film cameras - there is no sense in this maddness, but at least I know I'm not alone.

I too have glasses I can push into the eye socket, which is useful with the M3 & M6ttl, but with the III I find the little finder so small and the edges so fuzzy as to distract me from what I'm doing. Since the rangefinder is not in the viewfinder I might as well move my eye to an auxiliary finder to frame the picture.

I have brightline finders (Leica and Voigtlander) for everything from 15 to 75 mm, a about 8 or 9 different multifinders of varying utility and clarity! Including the Leica VIOOH, a Braun multiple brightline, a couple of Russian/East German turret finders and a TEWE zoom finder, and probably a few more hidden away I have forgotten about, I used to have a saved search for multi-finder on Ebay, I couldn't resist them :)

Till I got the tired of 'what, another viewfinder...' from domestic authority

Just remember to correct for parallax up close. Been too long since I used mine and got used to my M models.:o

The IIIf is so yesterday. Get the newer IIIg. It has bright lines that correct for parallax in the finder.

Thanks Rick, but It is precisely because it is 'so yesterday' that I have bought it. Personal bias or something similar. ;)

I was making a bit of a joke since the IIIg is from about 1957 and is also very yesterday. But, I do have a II (from 1934) and it is smaller than the IIIg and with the collapsable 5.0 Elmar it fits in a pocket and is so simple. With a SBOOI 50mm finder on it... perfect. The SBOOI finder is my particular favorite.http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/SBOOI You need one of these now for sure.:p Next step is to get infected with viewfinderitis.

this is a confession thread, isn't it ? i thought i was the only nut to get 2 classic leica's at almost the same time.

in my case, i had a locally purchased iiif (and a Summitar) in hand, but i 'waited' one whole day to cancel a iiic i was waiting on from Leicashop. so lo and behold within the same week i have 2 cameras, a Summitar and the delectable Elmar 5cm f3.5.

one year on the grin is still on my face when the cameras get a workout :D

p/s Is Melbourne and Malaysia in the same time zone ? maybe that's what's causing the irrational desire to buy 2 cameras at the same time.

Agreed! My 1957 combo makes for a wonderfully pocket-able camera that is a delight to use. So far have only used it for b&w (example) but curiosity about how the Elmar renders colour led me to put a roll of Fuji C41 36exp in it and I was out and about using it in a very sunny Marlborough yesterday. Am only half-way through the roll so will have to venture forth again and a find a new subject for the rest of the roll.

Well, you finally got me - I have to say that it has been the members of the Leica forum, at get togethers in Europe, posts in this thread and their blog posts and pushed me over the edge to join the world of Barnack Leica owners!

I went for the IIIb appealed to me over the other models (small size, more little screws and view finder and range finder close together). I put half a roll of C41 through it and I'm pleased with the result and the camera feels wonderful so it makes me want to use it. I'll be doing black and white next and turning the red lights on for the dark room soon enough.

Dan, the Barnack disease has no known cure but occasional alcohol improves the condition.

That first pis is great but I think the colour rendering of that lens needs some tweaking as the sand looks very black. ;)
