Infinite Posted November 13, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 13, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last July I bought at an authorized Leica dealer in the Netherlands a brand new M8.2 for a bargain price (last one!). I used it for two months with great results. Unfortunately the LCD soon started to show a severe coffee stain half size of the display. The camera has been sent to Solms for repair under warranty. It turned out that Leica couldn’t fix it anymore and replaced my M8.2 by a brand new M9-P free of charge! This is very nice of them:)
Advertisement Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Hi Infinite, Take a look here Praise for Leica customer care with the M8.2.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Erik Gunst Lund Posted November 13, 2012 Share #2 Posted November 13, 2012 Congratulation, the first we have seen here with a 'no charge' replacement from Leica. Sad if you where looking for the 'Ur Leica Digital M'...
wda Posted November 13, 2012 Share #3 Posted November 13, 2012 Claude, well done! It is always gratifying to read positive stories of Leica support.
Jeff S Posted November 13, 2012 Share #4 Posted November 13, 2012 Since you're new posting here, perhaps you aren't aware that this issue, and new policy, has been discussed ad nauseam: This thread, which spanned the whole saga This thread, initiated by Stefan Daniel (from Leica) in response to the storm. And the Photokina Q&A, which clarifies the policy Most are appreciative of the policy. Those who would prefer the M8.2 are not, but the solution is generous nonetheless. Glad the policy served you well. Jeff
earleygallery Posted November 13, 2012 Share #5 Posted November 13, 2012 Congratulations. Leica replaced your M8 with an M9 because they cannot repair or replace the LCD on the M8. Given that your camera was under warranty, what else could they do?
Jeff S Posted November 13, 2012 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2012 Given that your camera was under warranty, what else could they do? Well, I suppose they could have refunded his purchase price, but the policy is more generous this way. But I think we covered all that, and lots more, in the above links. But I think we covered all that, and lots more, in the above links. Jeff I agree it's a good policy though, in truth, it is probably less costly (in cash terms) for Leica to supply an M9P than it is to refund the retail cost of an M8.2 (even one that was discounted at time of purchase). spylaw4 Posted November 14, 2012 Share #8 Posted November 14, 2012 Ah, but what happens if/when the supply of M9/M9-P runs out?
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted November 14, 2012 Share #9 Posted November 14, 2012 They still have the ME in production. This would do it for me. And after that you might get an "M", but only in case if you still have a faulty/ irrepairable 8.2 WITHIN guarantee. Should be a rare beast by then. Erik Gunst Lund Posted November 14, 2012 Share #10 Posted November 14, 2012 Last July I bought at an authorized Leica dealer in the Netherlands a brand new M8.2 for a bargain price (last one!).... May I ask how much you paid...
luigi bertolotti Posted November 14, 2012 Share #11 Posted November 14, 2012 A lucky combination (for you) and a smart problem solving from Leica... just a curios on a detail: has the M9P a full 2 years warranty OR an end of warranty date coinciding with the warranty expiration of your original M8.2 ? I think that, in legal terms, they maybe could have the right to do so... (I know of similar cases in other fields - Monitors : a 24" LCD bought with 3 years warranty - unrepairable - replaced with a new better one - warranty expiration kept as the original)
luigi bertolotti Posted November 14, 2012 Share #12 Posted November 14, 2012 Congratulations. Leica replaced your M8 with an M9 because they cannot repair or replace the LCD on the M8. Given that your camera was under warranty, what else could they do? I think that, strictly speaking, they could have provided another M8.2, not factory new, but fully refurbished (if they had one, which can or can not be) : but... which warranty they could have sticked on it ? So, better to go the straight way of M9P...
satijntje Posted November 14, 2012 Share #13 Posted November 14, 2012 M8 with coffee ring replaced by M9 M8.2 with coffee ring replaced by M9-P (both in case the M is still under warrantee) Strategy is clear! John
wizard Posted November 14, 2012 Share #14 Posted November 14, 2012 Actually, this policy is not new to Leica. I purchased a brand new M6TTL in 2001, which developed shutter problems after about 2 years. Sent it in for repair and got a phone call telling me that they are not able to fully resolve the shutter problem, no matter what. Since by that time the M6TTL had gone out of production, I was offered the choice of a brand new MP or M7. They know how to keep customers happy. Infinite Posted November 14, 2012 Author Share #15 Posted November 14, 2012 Thank you all for your comments. I'm very satisfied with the M9-P they offered to me and do not consider to upgrade to the new M anytime soon! For HD video I already use Nex7 with AF lens! @ Erik I paid €2999 for a never used M8.2 with two years warranty. @ Luigi As replacement I got a brand new M9-P including Lightroom license and two years warranty starting from the date customer care shipped it to me. photolotse Posted November 20, 2012 Share #18 Posted November 20, 2012 I've had a coffee stained display on a M8.2 bought new in December 2010 as well. The M8.2 had been replaced today by a black paint finish M9-P with a serial of 42083xx for free by Leica Customer Care. The warranty card dates 16th Nov. 2012 filled out by Leica. Unfortunately the battery charger is DOA. It only charges when using the cigarette adapter. Have to get back in contact with Leica CC to solve the charging challenge. Infinite Posted November 21, 2012 Author Share #19 Posted November 21, 2012 @photoallee Congratulation with your new M9-P and sorry to hear about the battery charger failure. I’m sure they will replace it promptly. Did you shipped the M8.2 accessories to CC? I actually sent only the body and still have them including the charger. To my surprise, the M9-P I received has a synthetic leather trim like used with the MM and not the one I have seen so far with M9-P. What about the one you received? photolotse Posted November 21, 2012 Share #20 Posted November 21, 2012 @Infinite I've sent in body and accessories, should have kept the charger and battery as you did. The leather is not the MM one but the standard M9-P's. I've read somewhere that Leica has changed the type of leathering on the M9-P. The shutter had 895 actuations on arrival. Have you checked how many pictures have been taken with your new camera? Have fun with your M9-P, Carsten
