Preparing for the M

I think the "hot item" is going to be the 80-200/f4 Vario-Elmar R, which is why I bought one a couple of weeks ago. I got an exc++ lens for £600, which I think will seem a real bargain in a few months time. Scale focussed on the M9, it is as sharp as a pin. Have I understood correctly that Leica intend to offer 6 bit lens codes for some of the R lenses or will it just be a single code "R Lens mounted"? It is just nice for lens identification at a later point by looking at the EXIF.

At Photokina I looked and used the R Adapter for the M. The adapter has 6 bit code which tells the M it is an R adapter and after that you use the menu to get off auto and go to manual R lenses and the menu brings the 20 R lens choices, one of which IS your 80-200/4 Vario Elmar.

See photo of adapter:

The tripod portion of this adapter is removable. Euro cost is 250 and part # is 14642. Sorry photo is a bit dark but it's OOC jpeg from my MM.

One good thing about the 180/3,4 APO Telyt is that the infinity hardstop is infinity.

I bought one just before the M-240 announcement and have been using it on my Olympus OM-D.

However simultaniously focusing and framing is really difficult at less than infinity - I hope the M-240 has picture in picture live view with magnification.

It has LV with magnification on the ones I used at Photokina.

Another rather surprising matter, none of the London Leica staff were able to answer my question as to any restrictions on which R lenses can be used with the R adaptor.

A screen will show which lens is required to be used and then selected. It pre-supposes that R lenses with a certain coding can be "read" but there does not seem to be a list of useable R lenses yet.

As R lenses have been around a long time I would be amazed if all of them are useable with the R adaptor. The Telyt long FL and vario lenses abound and I am eager to discover if these and other more obscure lenses, some made for Leica by Minolta and other manufacturer's will be useable.

I have the M brochure from Photokina which details the 20 R lenses supported once the R adapter is installed. So the information is readily available certainly to Leica staff, if a lowly me has the information!

My priorities? The new M delivers 24Mb per photo so I can start thinking of changing my iMac 24" 8Gb for a faster machine and a screen that would be better suited for print-preparation

Thank you for the picture showing the adapter code.

Can you remember which pair of frame lines the adapter brought up in the finder?

Bob.

I think that Andy felt it did not move the lever at all, which is 35/135. I hope so as this is what happens on my Leitax.

I make the code for R therefore to be 110111 - everyone agree?

Based upon the comments here, is it reasonable to expect that Leica may in future introduce longer lenses and zoom lenses designed specifically for the Leica M? If so, my "preparation" will probably be to wait for these lenses.

I don't know. Logic says they should have re-introduced the MATE 28-35-50 soon after the M8 came out. It is still my equal most used lens along with the 35 ASPH Summilux on my M8 and 9, when I am travelling.

Still it will give you time to save up :)

Yes, assuming it remains the same in the final product. Having black to represent a binary 1 always confuses me :D.

They had the 28-90 R on it and I used it with LV so there were no frame lines since I only used it that way. I felt why use frame lines when LV gave me the focusing I wanted to experience with the red shimmering lines around the "in focus" area.. Sorry did not use the frame lines now.

Preparing for the M I find myself well down the pre-order list at my favorite dealer. They tell me the list began last Spring as people anticipated an M10 would be announced on May 10... So by now the list is long, and I may or may not have a new M by this time next year!

But I take a welcome idea from previous posts about the Olympus VF-2 finder. I found two used ones at Adorama, one E+ and the other E condition. I set up to buy the E+ for $179 and then did a little more digging on the topic. When I went back to Check Out I got a message that the item was no longer available. Somebody here snatched it I'm sure! So I forthwith bought the E one for $174... it has now arrived looking new with its little pouch and shoe cover but no box. So, I'm ready when Leica is!

I have been offered an unused, old unsold stock, Polaroid 500mm f6.3 Cadiotropic lens at an extremely modest price. This lens is T mount, so I would also need a T to M adapter (available from Fleabay for around $30). Has anyone any experience of this lens, which was also sold under various other labels - ProOptic etc? I suspect it is nothing to write home about and will have the usual cadiotropic issues of weird bokeh. On the other hand it is a lot easier to carry around than my 550/5.6 Telyt and Televit and I doubt if it would be much, if any, optically inferior either. I am always concerned with the 550 Telyt/Televit outfit, that when the essential shoulder stock is mounted, I will be taken for a terrorist plus rocket launcher and some trigger happy cop will shoot first and ask questions later. :o

Not necessarily. Sometimes one gets lucky. :D :D :D

My understanding is that the metal of the cheaper adapters can be shaved off with use and fall into the camera with a risk of adhering to the sensor. I would appreciate if anyone can confirm this.

Certainly one of the cheap LTM to LM lens adapters I bought from Hong Kong is made from 'soft as putty' aluminium, so this could be a risk.

The 543195 (Visoflex replacement) adapter copies, that I am having a small batch made for forum members (first come; first served - 2 out of 5 already reserved), is being made from high quality brass and then the actual mounts probably plated for longevity. I hope to have a photograph of the second pre-production one to post in the next week or so. I will be pricing these at cost to me, as a service to fellow Visoflex enthusiasts.

Can anyone explain why many of the forum comments indicate that the new Leica M is not the ideal camera for macro photography?

Perhaps with the life-view option (x10) is not a good focusing system for macro?

I've the high performance Macro Apo Elmarit 100 mm R and would be very happy to use it with that M camera.

Waiting for your good news..

Francisco.

I fully expect the new M will be a fantastic camera for macro - I bought mint copies of both the 60mm and 100mm lenses on the basis that it will be, as well as being able to use my Micro-Nikkors, even, if I can avoid electrocuting myself, the 120mm Medical Nikkor.

Lighting of course is always an issue at close repro ratios, so I'm looking forward to the new Kaiser ring-LED light which has built in rechargeable batteries to allow cordless operation - great for focussing as well as exposure.

It will be intesting to see where Leica goes with new lenses. There isn't a lot wrong with any of them so plugging the gaps or replacing existing lenses should really give way to lenses which push the boundaries. Macro, Zoom, Telephoto...

My dream? Reintroduce the 28-90 R zoom with rangefinder coupling and click stop settings of 28-35-50-75-90 to set the frame lines to allow use in both Live View and Rangefinder mode. I wonder how much the Leica APO Penta-Elmarit-M 28-90 mm f2.8 ASPH would cost?
