What Do You Think Of The Changes?

I have found it works for me in that I have no interest in the digital side so I can just visit my favourites:

Leica M7 / MP and Film M, Film Forum, Darkroom and Barnack's Bar. The forums I rarely go in to now are the 'Photo Forums' purely because you cannot tell which are film or digital and I am primarily interested in film images

In an ideal world it would make more sense to have top level forums of:

Digital, Film, General Leica Discussions and the Challenges. Then move everything relevant under those headings.

I realise the work involved and Andreas has more to do than look after us full time. One area I use a lot is the suggestion I made to Andreas about having a larger Random Album Images page. I use this every visit and have turned up some real gems.

There is indeed something which is a bit similar. It is called "New Posts" and is an entry in the menu bar near the top of the page. It shows all threads which have posts you haven't yet read. Another one is called "Today's posts". It shows - surprisingly - all threads which contain posts which have been posted today

You can set the forum to add a subscription for every thread you post in. The "User CP" then will show you all threads you have subscribed to which have posts in them you haven't yet read.

It would be good in New Posts, and on TapaTalk, to be able to exclude the German language part of the forum.

Having said that, I do like looking at the photographs regardless of the language. On another forum, we have the ability to view "All Posts", with the most recent posts at the top, and you can then exclude particular threads from that view - so when a thread gets tedious, exclude it, and it never reappears in that view (whether New Posts or All Posts).

There are topics I rarely view, but it is good to be drawn away to new postings.

Cheers

John

Just to show you that things are moving...

1. The Russian Forum was shut down today

2. I improved (hopefully) the "New Posts" link:

It now allows to look for:

- All posts in the international forum

- Posts in product related topics, general discussions, photo forum and challenges

- Bonus track: New offers in the Forum Classifieds and Leica Deals.

Better?

Andreas

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all the responses.

The major effect that I can detect from the changes is the decline of Barnack's Bar.

That is a great shame to me. Along with the extraordinarily deep and varied expertise of the contributors to the rest of the site, it was one of the things that distinguished this forum from so many others.

I don't know whether there are statistics on this, but it appears to be very much less visited and less active than it used to be before the changes. Where it was once one of the more visited forums, judging by the "number viewing" figures on the home page, its now one of the least.

I find that very sad, because it wasn't a natural trend but appears to have come about as a result of the changes.

I'm finding the film, darkroom and film-M fora are also much less lively since the changes. Whereas I was often amazed beforehand that the numbers on the old film section could sometimes rival the M9/M9P/Monochrom section, since the changes it's not unusual to see only one or two people viewing all the film subsections combined.

My own habits used to be looking-in on the film section in a casual way - noticing an ongoing discussion on a camera or a film at random, and possibly contributing. Somehow all the clicking around since the break-up takes the life out of the whole process, and I often don't bother. I'm afraid I'm rather disappointed at the changes, I wonder if others feel the same way?

PS: forgot to mention that I truly appreciate all the hard work put into the forum!

Speaking as one who was once pretty regular here but who wandered off for a couple of years, I find using the forum very much more cumbersome than it used to be.

Perhaps those of you who have been here all the time cannot appreciate how much more complex it has become and newbies will not, of course, know any different.

That's it in a nutshell.

I find my main point of entry these days to be Tapatalk.

Regards,

Bill

I agree Bill,

I almost exclusively use Tapatalk as its just so much easier to use & navigate than the web interface...

I've just noticed that since the last round of tweaks, photo images on the forum are now showing up!

I am using a dongle to connect to the internet and - only of the Leica forum - images would not display, I'd just get a small blue square.

Whatever has changed I like it. That said the dongle is going soon in favour of 'proper' broadband.

Indeed! I find that setting my browser to disallow images makes it so much faster! :)

So much for photography sites, eh? (That's a Canadian thing.)
