Meerkats or Suricates live in the semi-arid regions of Southern Africa and are related to the Mongoose family. They live in large underground burrows with numerous entrances and are diurnal, returning to their burrows around sunset. They are very social, and live in colonies averaging in size from 15 to 30 members. They prey mainly on insects, scorpions, lizards and snakes.

I sat and waited at this burrow for about an hour and a half. Just before sunset I was rewarded, when this small group returned from their day's outing.

Thank you all for the feedback and comments, always appreciated.

These little guys are so active, alert and so sociable, that when observing them, especially when they're standing upright scanning the area, they seem to take on almost human-like qualities (only the good qualities).

George- I've seen that extremely irritating advert that uses the puppet meerkats with Russian accents.....
