If I have more money than sense when my number comes up I will buy it.

If in the intervening few months the combo of M9P and MM does what I want then I might give it a miss.

I could forgive Leica everything with regard to the M8/9/M .... except that crappy LCD screen which is hopeless for assessing focus accuracy..... :o

I am going to wait for the ostrich skin special edition:rolleyes:

Cheapskate - I'm waiting for the titanium version - I hope it's a long wait so that I can afford it!

But more seriously, and I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, there is a lot of video and mixed video and stills going on the the pro photography world these days and being able to do high end video with a small camera that also does high quality still will be very interesting to some reportage photographers. ( sorry for the ludicrusly long sentance ). Leica have always produced expensive high quality cameras that a certain type and style of professional photographer will use and the M continues that. It will, in my humble opinion, sell well and once again be a memorable camera. I've still got my M6 though and a wedge of HP5 in the freezer ( no not the M6 in the freezer )

As a final note I would certainly like to get the M

bye for now

I have no interest in video or live view so will pass, even if I could afford it. Though I may start to save for an MM as a second (high ISO) body to my M9.

If funds don't allow I would buy an M-E rather than a used M9, but I will be watching to see any decrease in used M9/M9P prices if they end up being offloaded in large numbers.

Its not good enough to sell my M9 for, so...no. The latest M just reeks of a desperate attempt to catch up.

I also think Sony or Canon or some company will put a massive sensor in a small body with EVF and a M mount and basically blow Leica to the weeds making leica a lens manufacturer only like Zeiss.

The M is the camera I've been waiting for since I bought my M8 five years ago in 2007.

Couldn't care less about the looks. I choose tools like drills for their function not aesthetics - same for cameras. Anyway, it's hardly a radical change in appearance!

All I have to do is work out how to afford now!

Kudos, Leica!

I admire your approach but today we know what the chuck size is, what speed it goes, but not how well it drills ;-)

I wish I wasn't bothered by aesthetics but if Leica built something really ugly I would struggle to buy it ( the M is not ugly by the way to my eyes )

I've ordered one today paid a deposit, and on the basis that you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, included the 50mm Summicron ASPH which is a gem to behold as well....

any chance we're going to see what makes them tick after you get yours? :D

I welcome the new M as the first of a new line of hybrid cameras. Insofar as the M is at least as good as the M9 when used as a digital RF then the new line has great potential. I remain to be convinced of the quality of the LV and EVF. This is where I anticipate significant development in subsequent models. An EVF that truly competes with, say, a Canon DSLR finder would make the hybrid a very attractive camera. I welcome Leica offering a R-solution but for the time being I will stick with the DMR/Canon combination for those lenses. It maybe the case that the IQ of the M and R lenses will significantly outperform the Canon option. I look forward to future reports on that front. While it is good PR to be seen to be supporting R lens owners, the real business potential will be in a new line of lenses that exploit LV/EVF and some future AF function.

As a happy M8.2 owner I skipped the M9. The M seems to offer all the improvements I was hoping for. The big unknown is the performance of the sensor. I'll wait for the first impressions and if the sensor doesn't disappoint (i.e. acceptable results with at least ISO 3200) I may buy the new M in about half a year or so.

I don't assume the run towards the M will be similar as it was for the M9. A lot of M9 users will skip the M or go for the Monochrom instead.

Best regards,

Wolfgang

I've ordered the M in silver chrome (I already have an M9 and am waiting for my MM):

1. Improved colour high-ISO.

2. Maestro.

3. Option of live-view/EVF for occasional use (I also see it as a way to efficiently help learn/check the focussing idiosyncrasies of more demanding lenses).

4. Video () for very occasional use as the family like it (and I can dump that stupid Canon video camera).

5. Weather sealing (used the M9 in rain just the night before the M was announced and was bemoaning the lack of weather/dust seals) - not that it helps with the unsealed lenses.

6. And all of the extras being unobtrusive (except for a few buttons) for when I don't want to use them.

There is plenty of time for information about the new sensor to trickle out (I hope)....../

7. 1000 shots per battery in "rangefinder" mode

8. Nice new "tv" screen on the back

9. Quieter shutter

The CMOS image quality / look is the big unknown, the prints on display at Photokina seem a little soft but they are at f11 / f16

Who will buy the M

Who likes the functions ( by function EVF, Liveview. R adapter, video, GPS, grip etc)

Who was pleased with announcement of he M

Who was dissapointed with announcement of the M

Thoughts ?

I've ordered one.

The m9 will have to go - I think.

I don't know yet what I'll do with my 5D Mk II which is getting very little use since the M9 found its way to me. On my summer vacation I just used it once only to do some photographs and video of my children windsurfing - with the Canon 4/70-200 L IS.

- R adapter is no use to me as I have no lenses.

- EVF could be good but initially I will not buy it,

- LV will be great,

- video is great - one more reason to only take the M with me and leave all the other equipment at home.

- GPS is great but the corresponding grip looks bulky, I'll have to physically try it,

- the regular grip looks very good and I always liked the finger ring from the M9 Ti

If an M9 feels like an M, then the M feels like an M. It's an M camera.

Exactly. M3, M2, all the way through are Ms.

I would be tempted.

I like EVF and Liveview although they are not essential. I would find Liveview more useful. Especially a grid pattern. Many people will love the R adapter and chance to expand lens range. Not necessary for me but a great idea and purpose-designed for Andy!

I have no interest in video or GPS. Better weather-proofing is a big plus. The 24MP CMOS sensor in the top model is also a sensible upgrade.

Pleased. A forward-looking move by Leica. Digital cameras are evolving and this is the next step along the evolutionary ladder. The new Ms are real cameras for the real world. They make a lot more practical sense than another luxo LE model.
