Leica M and M-E

I was sure that I must have overlooked the meaning in all the things that were published about this new camera this past week, and that another forum member would come up with the answer right away. I enjoy these efforts at coming up with answers, but still find it peculiar that the Leica people have not told us what their intention was with this name. Maybe 'M-E- is just 'M-E'? Doesn't really matter of course... After all, what's in a name?

I tried to find out what the 'E' in 'M-E' stands for. I saw the camera referred to as an 'Entry-level' camera, and on the Leica website I saw the camera described as the 'Essence' of a Leica. Just wondering.

This isn't the first time Leica has used that designation. There was the R-E, a version of the R5 lacking a couple of exposure modes. Anyone recall what "E" stood for then according to Leica? Here in the US people always thought it meant Economy.

Sounds very plausible. Best explanation so far, in my opinion. Thank you.

While the new Leica M looks like it will be great, it’s clear the Leica designers were not really anticipating the new 36MP sensors of the D800/D800E/A99. Though resolution isn’t everything in a camera system, of the Leica M sensor can’t resolve more than 81% of the D800, and it’s a modest 14% increase in resolution over the M9. That’s not enough of an increase in resolution for me to justify upgrading my M9P to an M to compliment my D800E.

I can't see that this D800 36 MP sensor offers any significant advantage to Canon's and Sony's with - about - the same number of pixels as the new Leica M: 22 - 24 MP. Strangely enough. If the 36 MP sensor really did then that is a development that the market will demand, - and, I am sure, Leica will follow up on. As will the others. There is nothing that Nikon can do that the others can't. Quite on the contrary. A super high pixel resolution will certainly look better with superb optics - like Leica's.

I think the M (hum..M10) looks very promising. We still have to see the files it produces to conclude. For once, I think that Leica has put more into a new model than what we could expect. I hope that the new M (M-m-m) don't offers any negative surprises as the Italian Flag, strange artifacts, Red Lines, Dots, dead cameras, high capacity card conflicts etc.

I am very enthusiastic about the M (M-m). I will certainly buy one. But I will not be a beta tester. And this time I mean it. I am not fully content with my M9, but I feel strongly that I have not utilized my M9 to it's full potential. First of all; it's the photographer - not the camera - etc.

As someone who has used the D800E, I can tell you that its an extraordinary sensor. The sharpness at pixel level combined with the amazing DR was quite unexpected (Ming Thein has commented on the dream of the latest Leica lens technology on this sensor).

For me, the DSLR is a depreciated design. The D800E is like an old car with a new engine (the sensor - which I believe is a Sony).

Carrying around that mirror box and large design is so 1960s.

Remarkable IMHO, the Leica M series actually represents the future as well as the past, as its form and ergonomics put Leica, unexpectedly, at the luxury head of the wave of small high quality cameras.

In terms of the market, the 48-54mp Canon 3D is less then a year away.

Saying all that, chasing MP is not that useful for me (personally I prefer more DR).

If the new M sensor is good then I won't decry another 10mp. But at some point in the future (next M) it will be useful.

Given that it was launched at the "Das Wesentliche" event, I would say that the "E" stands for "Essential". They have removed stuff that is not essential.

Perhaps they should have called it the M-W

@Stealth3kpl

here are the pictures I was referring to. Maybe it's just me, but I find them flat looking..

Leica Camera AG - Fotografia - LEICA M

I am referring to the three shots on that page,

Cheers,

I think it's amazing what tonality and colour are in those photos considering the light is so horrendously flat. I think that's the point.

Agreed Paul. The other thing I was thinking , does M.Gaumy, who in the delightful video goes on about his film days, understand the first thing about PP in any of the DNG processing software now available?

Therefore, is there the chance that the images on the site are straight out of the camera Jpegs?
