bybrett Posted September 10, 2012 Share #21 Posted September 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just wondering if a number of people had the strap eyelet of their camera coming off. It's very unpleasant has your really risk loosing your tool! Leitz should probably look into a more secure assemblage. Can't quite see from the photos, are they screws and threads or just locator pins with glue?? Thanks

lct Posted September 10, 2012 Share #23 Posted September 10, 2012 Not on the M8, as far as I've noticed - there have been at least two or three cases on the M9. Here for instance. Never heard of this problem on the M8 either but happened a couple of times on the M9 indeed: Regret Purchase of M9 after 2nd service. - Leica User Forum lug strap eyelet - Leica User Forum lug strap eyelet - Seite 2 - Leica User Forum Mark Norton's photo doesn't look reassuring here: Anatomy of the Leica M8 - Seite 9 - Leica User Forum Still wonder if there are lock washers or anything else to secure the screws. jaapv Posted September 10, 2012 Share #24 Posted September 10, 2012 I cannot see any. There may be Locktite or possibly an unscrew-resistant type of thread.
bocaburger Posted September 11, 2012 Share #25 Posted September 11, 2012 Leica went from the crimped eyelets to the 2-screw type during the M6 production. Their stated reason was to prevent rotation, which was a pitfall of the prior single-axis design. It seems fragile, but has proven reliable through M6, M6TTL, M7, MP. If they are failing more often in current models it's probably due to incompetent assembly.
marknorton Posted September 11, 2012 Share #26 Posted September 11, 2012 The one on the shutter release side of the camera is relatively easy to replace, the back has to come off and the motor wind removed to expose the screws. The one on the battery side is much worse. It's hidden behind the battery casing which is the same moulding as the lens throat and to get at that, they have to remove the sensor (with the alignment issues when replacing it), the shutter, the light meter and finally the lens throat. markechoes Posted September 12, 2012 Share #27 Posted September 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) This happened to my M9 last year. I had found references on the net where it has happened to others as well. I was living in Berlin at the time so Leica picked it up from my door and fixed for me. VERY lucky I didnt drop it. I was fairly unimpressed at the time but they were very fast in fixing it. They also gave it a service and cleaned the sensor. The rewind button on my M2 kept coming loose too. But i've had that locktighted on now. So its not just the M9, I guess. Mark Photographs by Mark Irwin.
