dwbell Posted August 22, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted August 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey all, Â Finally took receipt of my 75 cron last week. The focus mechanism is a little "rough". Not graunchy sand in it rough, mechanical "can feel the greased ball race" rough. Â My 35 cron had a stick spot when new that soon wore in. Is this a known phenomenon and will it wear in? Or back to Similar experiences appreciated. Â Cheers,

elgenper Posted August 22, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted August 22, 2012 FWIW, mine is smooth as silk all the way; no rough spots whatsoever.

Or back to Similar experiences appreciated.  Cheers,  My 35 cron did a similar thing, stiff to start with then very soon silky smooth. My 75 cron is firm but smooth, am hoping like you that time will free it up,.
H. James Wolf Posted August 22, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted August 22, 2012 Had mine since new a lot of years ago. It's starting to look rough, and had to have a loose element fixed six+ years ago. But it never focused rough and still doesn't.
earleygallery Posted August 22, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted August 22, 2012 Can you compare it with another example? Unless you are being particularly picky (and some on here are!) then it doesn't sound right, and I'd return it for a replacement. Â Leica QC strikes again! thighslapper Posted August 22, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted August 22, 2012 Spend an evening watching tele and run it in and out for a few hours.... Â If finally ok, do nothing, if still not the usual Leica silky smoothness the return for adjustment. Â worked with my original 50/1.4...... which was distinctly sticky (a common complaint with this lens)

Not being picky, and I know what you mean around here! No this is like an over tightened ball race. Ever over tightened a kids pedal on th bike? That feeling. Mechanically graunchy, greased and constant but not silky smooth. It's audible, to give you an idea.  Will follow thighslapper's advice and see how it goes. algrove Posted August 23, 2012 Share #8  Posted August 23, 2012 My new one of about 2 months ago is slimy smooth. IMHO, Don't put up with it for more than a few days since it should be better than you describe for a new Leica lens.
erl Posted August 23, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted August 23, 2012 My 75 cron (maybe 5 yrs old) has always been silky and beautiful, as I expect it. Â My new 28mm elmarit had a sticky patch at about 6mtrs! After about 4 yrs I was at a leica Service place getting my Noct fixed and mentioned it. They fixed it in no time by properly lubricating it, no charge. Ask your dealer or service agent to look at it. They are better at fixing than we are.
dwbell Posted August 23, 2012 Author Share #10 Â Posted August 23, 2012 Yeah, going to send it back in. Â Man do I hate Leica's quality control. This is the third time I've had to send stuff back from new. The first Summarit 75 I had to bridge the delivery gap ( 1 year) of the cron had a massive "object" in the middle of the lens assembly inside. You could easily see the frikin thing when looking through the lens not even mounted on a body. Makes me wonder if "Look through the lens" is not on their QC list? Just as "rotate focus ring" doesn't seem to be. Â Sigh.
algrove Posted August 23, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted August 23, 2012 If QC is an issue at Leica, I do not expect it to get better after the new plant opens up with many more "new" employees being trained by the ones that are letting these bad issues get through today. Â Usually German QC is the hallmark of their products. Maybe waiting another 2-3 months for each lens insytead of hurrying them out to us would be better in the long run since we are the ones that suffer the most from all these QC issues. earleygallery Posted August 23, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted August 23, 2012 QC issues are quite remarkable when one considers that these are hand assembled products and then a Leica employee takes the bother to hand write a 'quality check passed' card to go with the product. Â Maybe when they're busy they just write the cards and don't actually bother to check anything!
TomB_tx Posted August 23, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted August 23, 2012 I suspect they concentrate most on the QC areas that affect optical performance, such as lens centering, etc. These seem to set Leica apart more than mechanical issues. The Cosina Voigtlander lenses I've purchased have been flawless in mechanical mounts, focus accuracy, control "feel" - but have more optical issues than Leica. thighslapper Posted August 25, 2012 Share #14  Posted August 25, 2012 If its anything to go by the M9 assembly video does not give the impression of a high-pressure sweatshop with employees cutting corners to keep up the production numbers  It's probably the atmosphere of torpor and sleepiness that is resulting in things slipping through without being 100% ok. ......
