picked it up! in pretty much MINT condition....from a guy who has 2 M8s actually. He feels the shutter on this is quieter than his other M8, and thinks the camera may have had the M8.2 update done on it prior to when he bought it, however i'm not sure how to determine this....any suggestions?

i don't have a lens yet....so for now i'm just sitting on the couch playing with the shutter sound! What a beautiful machine. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. I can't wait to get the 35mm f1.4 lens i have arriving soon.

If the shutterspeed is 8000 max it has not been updated, if it is 4000 it has.

it has 4000.....so this means it's an M8 with the M8.2 upgrade? sweet!

so the LCD is sapphire coated as well? When i tap on the screen of the M8, it does sound different than when i tap on my D-Lux.....

Not necessarily. The M8 upgrade program included 3 potential upgrades, and one could choose to get 1, 2 or all 3. Besides the 2 upgrades you reference, the third involved changing the frame lines (to 2m), which happens to be my favorite change.

A fully upgraded M8 is still not identical to an M8.2, the latter including black dot (with black cameras), black paint (rather than black chrome), etc. And the M8.2 will be noted as such on the hot shoe.

good point. so far i know that i have the upgraded shutter and sapphire lcd screen.

how can i tell if i have the upgraded frame lines? hard for me to know, as i'm not familiar with the non-upgraded frame lines.

i'm pleased either way...as i paid regular M8 prices (a bit lower, if anything)...and got some extras! The seller had told me that he thought the camera was an updated camera...so i was expecting these findings, however didn't pay much of a premium for them.

"The camera was upgraded for the following; Shutter/ Sapphire Glass / Mask"

that's the official reply i got back from Leica about whether the camera was fully upgraded....so it was! I guess i got a better deal than i expected as It's an "upgrade surprise!"...lol

Use a cheap body cap, drill a hole in the center. Aluminum foil over the hole, use a pin to make an even hole in it.

Or look for a Canon 50/1.8 in Leica Mount and use an M-Mount adapter. Should be under $200.

I second that; I used my M8 with just such a pinhole "lens" for the first four month before I bought a lens:

Compared with an SLR or Mirrorless camera: being able to see outside of the framelines is a big advantage that you quickly learn to take advantage of. BUT: everything "appears: sharp through the viewfinder, and getting used to the superimposed split image for actual focus takes getting used to. Learning to pre-focus on a spot, and waiting for the subject to move into it- some practice.

ha, it's gonna take a while!

today i was standing on a street corner trying to get cars moving by in focus...and pretty much missed all of them ;)

stationary objects i have already become quite quick with, within 24 hours....feels like 2nd nature already....absolutely love it.

There IS something joyously natural about the Viewfinder window. It certainly is challenging to focus in changing situations, but for myself the overcoming of 'challenges' is integral to the joys I gain via photography.

For things like moving cars: focus on the street lines and wait for a car to move into position. Same with most action shots- focus on a spot and wait for the subject to move into position.

Focus set on where my daughter landed on a previous dive.

I hate to be the guy that throws water upon the fire... but it really confuses me: why would someone buy an M8 (at 10 mp) body when they can get a BRAND NEW (not used) 5dmk2 (at 21 mp, CMOS full frame sensor, 14 bit, HD video), an adapter and a piece of R glass for the same -or less- money?

I'm sorry but I don't "get" that.

I really don't.

Take this deal, for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEICA-M8-10-3-MP-DIGITAL-CAMERA-BLACK-WHIT-VOIGTLANDER-NOKTON-CLASIC-35MM-LENS-/251135484503?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item3a78d76257

You'd have to be crazy to pay that "buy it now" price. The frigging lens is only 600 Euro, NEW!

Or this deal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-M8-Rangefinder-film-Camera-Body-Black-Boxed-/190689738367?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item2c65fe7e7f

Or this deal http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-M8-10-3MP-Black-Digital-Rangefinder-Camera-Mint-Condition-/370642615857?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item564c057e31

This -for example- is a WAY better deal! http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-II-DSLR-Camera-EF-24-105mm-L-USM-Lens-/320972963810?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item4abb7abfe2

I'm sorry, I am not trying to be a jerk. I'm just saying this situation doesn't make sense to me.
