thoughts on Leica Akademie Monochrom event, anyone?

The announcement of the Leica M Monochrom event has been burning a hole in my camera bag, especially since it is in San Francisco, so it would only cost me a bus ride and a day off from work to attend. I am not a professional, as many of you are, just a passionate amateur, with not enough time, although I spent many hours on my knees in my converted bathroom darkroom until we moved from that house eight years ago. I shoot 50/50 B/W to color, have a Digilux 2 and M9. I am not a computer techie, or Leica-pedia, but I can manipulate the basics in LR4 and SE. Is this program going to be over my head? I do not need the MM, but do need to pay the mortgage etc, do we know if it is going to be Monochrom centric? Thanks for your thoughts.

As Jaap said—the event will certainly be Monochrom-centric. And if you used to work in your own wet darkroom and furthermore know the basics with Lightroom then the event most certainly won't be over your head. These events are not meant for pros but for amateurs just like you.

If you plan to acquire an M Monochrom then I think the event is a must. If not then I'd guess it still wouldn't be a total waste because you'd learn a lot about digital black-and-white in general and about converting digital colour to digital black-and-white, too ... but the event's center of gravity definitely will be the M Monochrom. In either case, it will be fun I'm sure.

And oh, if you don't plan to buy an M Monochrom and attend the event anyway then you might possibly return with the buring desire to have one! So beware! It might become an expensive experience ;)

Kaethe,

Mortgages are overrated. Where is the event?

I attended a couple of back to back Akademie classes in Washington DC this Spring and they ARE worth going to. A big advantage is you can use any camera body and/or lens you want during the class. So bring an empty SD card and borrow a MM and then go home and have fun with LR, etc.

Also you get a voucher for use against a Leica P/N for one year should you want a lens or camera. Tom Smith is wonderful and is really helpful and in each class they invite a local pro who also gives great advice and brings tons of experience to the event.

Hi Kaethe,

I'm thinking about the event in Dallas but that is in Feb 2013 and by than I either have sold mine already (don't think so) or don't need to go anymore.

according to B&H my order is due early September.

I would go for it, if it is close by.

Thanks everyone for your input, I have registered. I suspect, as some of you have mentioned, that I will be bit by the MM bug. I am looking forward to the chance to try out all of the toys, as one of the questions when I registered was "what would you like to try". It will be interesting as well to see the difference in my work between the MM and my M9.

For those of you not on our chunk of dirt, here is the link to Leica Akademie North America

Leica Camera AG - Leica Akademie North America

and the link for the actual class (in SF)

Hi Kaethe,

good that you signed up ....

and in terms of MM bug,

leave the bug spray or repellant at home.

Maybe you can use a Nikon brochure to keep the devil away ...

Have fun

Hi Kaethe,

New here at the L-Forum but a long time Leica user.

I too will be at the SF event, just booked the class and flight yesterday.

Leica NJ says that it will be held at the Hotel Triton, but that is subject to change at this point.

Once they confirm the venue, I'll be looking for advice on which hotel me & my Monochrom should stay at...

Oh oh, I can feel a tiny tug to put my name on a list somewhere. I must resist.

kaethe,

Not to put the pressure on, but I can attest that almost all of the events sell-out in San Francisco.

"and then there were none". :(

I tried twice in Montreal and was not successful. I emailed and asked to be put on future events but never heard from them!
