Recently fitted a 39mm filter adapter, B+W med yellow MRC filter, and a modern Leica 2.8 M hood after receiving advice through this forum. Loaded up the camera last weekend with ISO 125 FP4+, and took some shots around the backyard, and at the snow. Very happy with the shots in general. Developed at home in Ilfosol 3, 6min at 20C, and scanned on an Epson 4490. I've noticed significant vignetting in a few (but not all) of the snow shots, which I've attached- and am not sure if this is due to the length of the adapter-filter-hood combo. The light was bright for the affected shots, and they were taken at around F8-11, shutter speeds 1/500 or so for the brightest ones. Vignetting was not noticeable in shots taken around the backyard, with much lower light and f-stops at around 2.8-4. I was under the impression that vignetting due to a long hood would be more noticeable at wider f-stops- have I got that wrong? Appreciate any advice/ thoughts... Of course, living in Italy, I go skiing in true winter Whatching your photos I look forward when I will go skiing again. I have see vigneting at f2 - f3 without hood. The same hood on my Elmar does not cause any increase in vigneting. I use Summar (The precursor of Summitar) at f 6 or 8 Have nice time skiing. 250swb Posted July 31, 2012 Share #3 Posted July 31, 2012 If you are stacking an adapter, a filter, and then a hood on a Summitar I think you are going to get some vignetting. I use my Summitar with an adapter and a filter, or an adapter and hood, but never all three. Often I use it with just the adapter as a minimal hood because of its depth. tobey bilek Posted August 1, 2012 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2012 It is the filter adapter. The lens needs E41,not 40.5 either, filters. EBAY. Mine does not do this with E41 UV filter and proper lens shade. step down rings always risk vignetting. The only way to prove this with a screw mount camera is to remove and replace the filter and shade singly and in combination. when I needed a UV/IR filter for my M8, it was suggested a 40.5 with plumbers teflon tape. see recent threads on the M8 forum.
