MSUSpartan Posted July 9, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) We inadvertently left our silver Leica X2 in a taxi today in Manhattan New York. I got in a cab around 9:45 and got off at 10am at Wall Street and Morris (Wall Street Bull)... stupidly I didn't take down the medallion number and paid for the fare by cash for once. I've filed a report with the Taxi and Limo Commission but I wouldn't hold my breath recovering it via that route. We would really appreciate it if you can spread the word or keep an ear open on a found Leica! I got the X2 for my wife as a present for a very special occasion and she's just heartbroken over the whole thing. Description: Leica X2 - Silver (model 18452) Artist & Artisan cloth strap Leica EVF attached 8GB Sandisk Extreme card inside with a lot of photos from a recent vacation Left in a NYC yellow taxi (Ford Escape) Serial number 04316698 My number is 917.324.0285 or you can email me at kei(dot)c(dot)ng(at)gmail(dot)com. MSUSpartan Posted July 9, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted July 9, 2012 ugh...so sorry to read this. I went to search for you on craigslist and see you already posted there. I wish I found it and could return it to you. Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it! The in-laws are in town so we rushed around trying to cram in as much touristy stuff and in our haste left it in the taxi. She feels really bad about it but we decided to not let it ruin the rest of the in-laws' time here, but it still really hurts! Long shot we know, but miracles do happen so we'll see! Already thinking about another camera for her but it will be MUCH cheaper.

Already thinking about another camera for her but it will be MUCH cheaper. I found a camera in a taxi last year and took it because I thought it was mine! It was a small Canon P& S..it was so sad as the pictures were from the person's birthday that night and the last shot was in the taxi. I posted it on Craigslist and no one ever claimed it. Do you have any homeowners or apartment insurance? Or even insurance from the credit card company? (not even sure that exists..). Can't dwell on the loss..do what I do...simply say.."it never happened'...denial is underrated..

andybarton Posted July 9, 2012 Share #6 Posted July 9, 2012 Depending upon your card provider, in the UK, any product over £100 bought on a credit card, is often insured against any loss for 90 days automatically, by VISA, Mastercard or Amex It will be worth giving your card company a call. Avatar Posted July 9, 2012 Share #7 Posted July 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) ^ def worth a try. I found this link..It's limited to $1000 per occurrence. http://www.bargaineering.com/articles/american-express-purchase-protection-perk.html Funny now remembering that I did use this years ago when my car was stolen and a new radar detector I had just purchased was stolen along with it...Amex did cover the loss. MSUSpartan Posted July 9, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted July 9, 2012 Thanks everyone, I bought it w/ an AMEX, I'm going to look into purchase insurance. Unfortunately I do not have homeowners or renters insurance. I've been meaning to look into it... here's the kick in the butt I needed I guess. wda Posted July 9, 2012 Share #15 Posted July 9, 2012 He should still have his purchase documents so should ensure Leica is informed, even if he failed to register ownership on the Leica website. Wonder if he insured the items?

nryn Posted July 9, 2012 Share #17 Posted July 9, 2012 I can't help with the camera, sadly, and I am sorry to hear you lost it. But in regards to insurance, I can say that as long as you are not a professional, in most places I have lived you can get camera equipment covered, if not on a standard homeowner's or renter's policy, then on a rider on that policy. Usually the standard policies have a limit for camera equipment and the rider covers the difference. Also, I am not sure these policies cover loss of this sort. They will usually cover theft and damage and are a good thing to have in general (they often also cover things like rental cars, travel plans, etc. ) No, I am not an insurance salesman! Best of luck to you. I left my phone in a cab to the airport earlier this year and the cab driver, who I use often, just dropped it off at my house. It was waiting for me when I got home. I wish similar luck your way.

phancj Posted July 11, 2012 Share #19 Posted July 11, 2012 I really hope leica tracks stolen serial numbers as apple is hopeless in this regard. My wife got her brand new two week old macbook pro stolen last year and when I asked apple if they do any tracking they told me the thief will be entitled to repairs and all privileges as an owner go figure??!! Hope the camera goes back to you pronto! CJ
brill64 Posted July 12, 2012 Share #20 Posted July 12, 2012 just some thoughts i had this morning after reading your post last night, that may be worth thinking about just in case you already haven't..you seem pretty efficient in your enquiries from reading this post but just in case: presumably you have reported this loss to the police? miracles do occasionally happen. someone handed my camera to the police in another town when i realised over a month later that i'd probably left it on a mountain top after placing it on a rock to use the self-timer. i had & that person did. he took possession of it after it was not claimed within a month so the police gave me his phone number. I called him and he mailed it straight back to me & i mailed him a cash reward in return. the film was even still in it. yes, it sounds ridiculous but my point is that not everyone is a complete thief. have you drawn up your own list of possible cab companies around the area from the phone book and sat down to call each one methodically yourself, asking if they have a lost & found record on your x2? items do get handed in by drivers or passengers & they are sent to a central control office where they get logged. you know the day/date/rough time/from where to where, how long it lasted, what you were wearing, etc., was your ride. if the person who got into the taxi after you decided to keep your x2, the battery would run out quickly. is it easy to buy a new charger separately & are there any external changes to the x2 charger making is less easy to replace? where would you buy one from? the leica store? would that person, not knowing it was the same as an x1, ask for an x2 charger? someone might remember, since this is a newly released model after all. perhaps you could phone around the leica stores in your area. they might have a description of someone wanting to buy an "x2" charger because they'd "lost" theirs. this would be unusual & someone might remember. it may be information that could help police whose action on lost & found may/may not be as informed, quite slow paced & administrative. ask around, however pointless it may seem. report your x2 serial number as stolen to your local leica service center. they will input it to their computer system worldwide. if someone brings your x2 in for repair, which they might well do if it had run out of battery, or even if they brought it in for any reason not knowing it was stolen, leica will immediately keep, inform and return it back to you. worth a shot. there is a free software you can download which will track if anyone has posted a file out of your serial number camera up online, such as on facebook, twitter or whatever & wherever. all you need to do is upload any pic taken with your lost x2, to search for it. you must have a test file somewhere from a previous card download. i'm sorry i can't remember the exact name but you could try googling "lost camera dot com" or "stolen camera dot com". something like that.
