Toshack10 Posted July 5, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently picked up a used digilux2. 2 issues It seems I cannot use a card greater than 2gig. I know that now (after buying an 8gig one:eek:) but I bought a Sandisk Ultra 2gig and that will not format - comes up with "formatting error". The camera came with a Kingston 2gig card which works fine but a quick search on here susggests some of you are using UltraIIs which are after the Ultra that I cannot format... what's my best option (speed-wise!) or am I missing a trick on the formatting process? The PO of my camera is a smoker. I know that now as every time I pick it up, I can smell the baccy. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of the pong? - it's mostly on the black vinyl/leatherette covering and much as I fancy getting a custom recover, I'm not sure I'm ready to spring for that just now. Thanks v much!
Advertisement Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Hi Toshack10, Take a look here 2nd Hand Digilux2 - questions.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted July 5, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 5, 2012 That's strange that you can not get teh San Disc Ultra 2 GB to work -- Mine does. However, most of the rest of the discs I have at just normal (not Ultra) which seem to perform the same as the Ultra dies. If you like your D2 well enough to keep it you might want to get additional 2 GB cards now while they are still available. Last week I tried at two convenient places and found those stores no logner stock such "small" cards. Regarding de-stinking the camera you might want to post the question to the head of housekeeping at a hotel that has no smoking rooms. Hotels charge a stiff fee for smoking in no smoking rooms, claiming (probably correctly) that it costs them significantly in time and materials to remove all traces of the smoking. Try formatting it first in your PC / Mac, then try to format it in the D2. Bruce
Toshack10 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted July 5, 2012 Thanks! It reads/opens as a card in my PC but not in the camera. very odd!

You could try soaking a soft cloth in Febreeze and then see if rubbing it on the covering removes the smell. To be honest, though, I find the smell of Febreeze to be almost as offensive as the smell of cigarette smoke... Bruce
Toshack10 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted July 5, 2012 Tea tree oil masked it for a few days... perhaps another wipe over will help:D
farnz Posted July 5, 2012 Share #7 Posted July 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The D2 won't read SDHC cards - only SD cards - so you need to make sure your card's not an SDHC. For the smoke smell an appropriately-sized wooden clothes peg is recommended. It clears the smell away instantly and for as long as you wear it. Pete. Blindjock Posted July 5, 2012 Share #8 Posted July 5, 2012 Hi DDK-Tosh As above, make sure it is not a SDHC card as they don't work. Also, sandisc cards are frequently fakes, even from seemingly trustworthy suppliers. You need to be very careful putting chemicals anywhere near a camera. For example , lens coating could be affected by anything remotely 'solvent'. However, perhaps try a careful wipe over the rubber areas with a baby-wipe. They are gentle and fantastic at lifting various nasties.
wda Posted July 5, 2012 Share #9 Posted July 5, 2012 Neutralizing tobacco smoke on a camera is a new one on me. I just wonder if you could find any pleasant fragrance which slightly dominates the odour, without affecting the camera? I am sure there must be proprietary substances made up for this purpose. Oh, and welcome to the forum, Toshak10!
Tietje Posted July 11, 2012 Share #10 Posted July 11, 2012 I had the same problem with 2 x 2GB Sandisk Ultra II's on my Digilux 2. I eventually managed to format them in another camera (a Panasonic G1) and they worked then. Like the OP I had no trouble with Kingston card.
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted July 11, 2012 Share #11 Posted July 11, 2012 Had the tobacco-problem with a pair of s/h-TRINOVIDS some time back. It vanished after some weeks just by itself. Be patient. Best GEORG
wparsonsgisnet Posted July 11, 2012 Share #12 Posted July 11, 2012 I would set the camera outside in the sun -- naturally, choosing a place where it won't walk away. Air and sunlight are good smell eradicators. Smoke (or oil) will probably have gotten into the innards, as well. I would make sure to take the bottom cover off, and remove the battery and the sd cardfor the "airing." This ia just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine what these guys to do insurance premiums. Toshack10 Posted November 29, 2012 Author Share #13 Posted November 29, 2012 A little update, 6 months in.... I have spent much of the week doing a basic photography course which has helped greatly in getting me off Aperture Priority mode and thus exploring a little of what my camera can do. My fellow participants are using new Canon/Nikon jobs and the lens length, ISO/fstop range and features are mind-boggling. However, for now I still think I need to work through what I have with my 2 as that should meet most of my needs. I can better see the limitations (90mm and grainy digital zoom for example ) but by the same token would likely never use all the features they have. On Tuesday we were playing with shutter speeds and I noticed, I think:confused:, that the viewfinder gives you a snapshot of your image. We were taking shots of fountains and freezing/blurring the water. I THINK I am right in saying that the blur (or not!) showed up in the viewfinder before releasing the shutter. Very cool, but I guess you knew that! Take control of the shutter-speed, however, and I realise how heavy handed I am: bad case of the camera shakes. Panning was one assignment that I think is likely easier with different kit! Ignorance is clearly bliss as I now know I have lots to learn!

Sorry to deflate you but the blur you're seeing in the EVF is most likely owing to the slow refresh rate compared to the speed that the water's surface is changing. Pete.
