Acekerman Posted July 1, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted July 1, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for a new travel camera and backup. I currently have a Canon 5dm2 and L lenses but previously had an M8. I miss having a Leica but with there are lots of choices these days. Thoughts on the X2 vs Fuji x pro 1 or even back to a M8? Appreciate all the input. Cheers.
Advertisement Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Hi Acekerman, Take a look here X2 or Fuji x pro-1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jip Posted July 1, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted July 1, 2012 I would go for a x pro-1 just because I would want to have multiple lenses... maybe leica glass with a converter!

Since you already have a 5DM2 and some L lens. I don't think you wanna invest on another camera with interchangeable lens again. I rather go for a compact fixed lens system like a X2. rcoles Posted July 2, 2012 Share #4  Posted July 2, 2012 I purchased the X2 to use with my M9 kit. I had been a Nikon DSLR user. The X2 is a joy to use and easy to take anywhere. It has Leica’s trademark simplicity and quality. I also considered the current crop of Fuji, Olympus and Sony offerings (I liked the Olympus EM-5 best) and ruled them out for various reasons and because early adoption of these newer cameras systems can be risky when a number of other systems are proposed to be coming to the market in the fall including some new products from Leica. Also my 2009 M9 is still one of the best options even today for my style of shooting (landscape, urban and people) and the X2 is a great second camera for me. But, your choice needs to be based on your style. Good luck Bob
Mixalis Posted July 20, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted July 20, 2012 Interesting question. I've owned both the Fuji X-Pro 1 and X100. I sold both, not because they were bad cameras--far from it--but because I got a digital M (as replacement for the X-Pro) and wanted to have the same family feel with the fixed-lens compact. Â But the X2 is a completely different animal to the X-Pro. The Fuji is a system camera more accurately compared with the M digitals. The X2 has to be compared instead with the X100. You can make a convincing argument for either being the better camera. I just like the relative simplicity and classic looks of the X2. Â You can compare on simply on price, on the basis that an X-Pro 1 and the 18mm lens (27mm equivalent) is about the same cost as an X2 with integral lens. There is no 35mm equivalent in the current Fuji line-up, so no direct comparison. You might think 27mm is too wide. With the Fuji the next step up is the 35mm (50mm equivalent). All the Fuji lenses are superb, by the way and, dare I say it here, comparable with Leica lenses. Â Fundamentally, though, if you have another system camera, why go for a whole new system when all you may need is a 27-35mm fixed-lens small camera? The X-Pro 1 hand X100 are technically advanced compared with the X2 (most noticeably in the provision of that brilliant hybrid viewfinder whereas the X2 has no built-in VF) so it really boils down to personal preference. Â For M9 owners, with existing investment in a system, the X2 makes a perfect complement with very much the same user experience (in particular the simplicity of the menus compared with Fujis or an other current competitors). You pays your money and you takes your choice.

baci Posted July 22, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted July 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been following the debate with interest, and after the initial rush of enthusiasm when the X Pro-1 was released, autofocus issues seem to have taken the bloom of that particular rose more recently. Having said that, there is no doubt that either camera will be a joy but that each brings with it a different set of imperfections and compromises. Â When making this decision you may want head to lead heart, but I think a better approach may be to forget the specs and the various strengths and limitations of each device and instead go for the one that feels best in the hand and makes you smile when you lift it to your eye. Â My 0.02c!
digitalfx Posted July 23, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted July 23, 2012 I recently debated the same combo, I have a Canon 5D3 and large collection of lens. I also own an M9 and previously had the M8...but I wanted a compact travel camera for times when the 5D, or even M9 was too much. Â I initially was very excited about the X Pro-1...having owned the X100 I was really looking forward to receiving my pre-order. But within a day of the X Pro1's arrival I was extremely disappointed and returned it. It was too slow and much larger than I expected. Â I ordered the X2 and it arrived just before I left on vacation last week...just a few days into my vacation now, I have really enjoyed the X2...so far the 5D hasnt left the camera bag. The X2 image quality is stellar, and although a slower camera its plenty fast enough and hasnt left my pocket since my vacation started. Â I find the X2 a perfect choice for a backup or travel camera and imo is a much better option for someone who already has an interchangeable lens camera like the 5D. Â The best camera is the one that's always with you, and the X2 fits perfectly.
rodriger Posted July 23, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted July 23, 2012 I love traveling and especially capturing wildlife photos. I have Fuji -X pro 1 and believe me it's an excellent cam. It has a large screen, compact one and retro style design. It has a new mount and lenses, having analogue control dial systems and the image quality is crystal clear. Go for this camera. it's expensive but at the same time it's also worth buying.
jaapv Posted July 23, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted July 23, 2012 Hmmm...I tried it, also with the long lenses that are needed for wildlife. (Thanks for pushing me there, Jono ) I found the autofocus on the native lenses not very exciting and manual focussing challenging to say the least. Not very suitable for wildlife imo.Image quality was decent, but the files cannot stand too much postprocessing, I find - and the colors need a lot of tweaking. The OM-D was quite interesting in comparison. Still good image quality despite the smaller sensor, excellent manual focus. The same weaknesses in the files, but better color. If I were to go for one of these cameras it would be the Olympus.

Ecaton Posted July 25, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted July 25, 2012 In lieu of a X2, I'd put the Fuji X100 plus Sony RX100 into the bag and even save some money. Considering what USD 2000 can buy in terms of compact cameras in 2012, the X2 is looking very old these days. (still hanging on to the X1).

The X cameras are the digital Barnacks, they SHOULD look old! IQ? Not old there. Simple? Not old there...quite refreshing in this day of bells and whistles. The Leica X is arguably the best looking compact camera ever. Â M-bodies look old... They SHOULD look old. What do you expect? An M8/M9/M10 that looks like a melted blob of plastic? Â If you want a Nikocanoolyricofujicon...buy it. I don't anymore. I prefer Leica products when they look and perform as well as they do. I am deliriously happy with my X1, having sold every Nikon I had except for a pair of FE2s which I use for my photography class students. No more DSLRs for me. Only thing that bothers me is that horrendous shutter/mirror sound. Jeff  Yeah, new foam helps and so does shooting in a noisy environment like at street level. Been shooting Nikons since I was about 21, digital and film and loved it. The FE/FM bodies have always felt nice so I keep them around. But they are not my choice for anything much anymore especially in a quiet environment. After using the Leicas that I have, the noise has become annoying these days.  Plus, I can't take a picture with an ugly camera...I just can't do it. threeputt Posted July 25, 2012 Share #17  Posted July 25, 2012 Yeah, new foam helps  I hadn't shot it in awhile so it had a CLA about a year ago. Replaced the seals, but not sure if he did it correctly, or if he maybe missed a strip or two. I don't remember this awful KLANG from before. No light is getting in, so I guess that's something. Shutter speeds are good too. I didn't send it off to anyone reputable because it's not worth anything. Took it to a local guy in Pensacola but even looking around his shop made me nervous! He won't be touching anything with an "L" on it..  Sorry to hijack the thread  Jeff
