erudolph Posted June 19, 2012 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) What strategies are commonly used for avoiding duplicate file numbers when using two bodies? I have an M9 and am contemplating the MM. My wife has a D-Lux 4 and is contemplating adding the V-Lux 40 for its long zoom. Thanks for any and all ideas! FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 19, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2012 I rename all my files upon import. Solves a lot of problems later on. Gordon
erudolph Posted June 19, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted June 19, 2012 Thanks Flash. That could work for me, but not for my wife.
k-hawinkler Posted June 19, 2012 Share #4 Posted June 19, 2012 I do the same by renaming, in this order, date (yyyy-mm-dd), time (hh-mm-ss), camera, lens, subject, suffix (to account for several images shot in the same second.) Camera could be M9, D3, NEX-7, ... Lens examples 50mm f1.4 Summilux-M ASPH, 28mm f1.4 Nikkor, 280mm f4 APO-Telyt-R, ...
jaapv Posted June 19, 2012 Share #5 Posted June 19, 2012 I use ImageIngester Pro for importing from my card, which does automatic renaming of the files.
mustafasoleiman Posted June 19, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 19, 2012 each of my cameras simply have a different starting number like 4000000 or 2000000... Upon import I then add the date to the beginning of the file name, but that is just for organisation, the numbering scheme is enough to avoid duplicates and recognise which camera did it. thighslapper Posted June 19, 2012 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2012 This post from shootist in this thread tells you what to do.... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/30157-two-bodies.html Works fine. I tend to keep seperate marked cards for each body although I think that both directories could probably co-exist and the camera will stick the right files in whichever is appropriate. No idea if both are retained when you re-format though .... never tried it. I stuff all my photos in Aperture and just set them to list by date/time and never bother to look at the actual image numbers.....

Thanks thighslapper... I've seen several references to the Shootist method. Shootist was using an M8, not an M9. His step 1 is "Set the Picture Number in the menu to "Standard"." This menu selection doesn't exist in the M9.

thighslapper Posted June 19, 2012 Share #12 Posted June 19, 2012 Thanks thighslapper... I've seen several references to the Shootist method. Shootist was using an M8, not an M9. His step 1 is "Set the Picture Number in the menu to "Standard"." This menu selection doesn't exist in the M9. You can ignore that bit. The basic principle of renaming the root folder for the images is the crucial bit. Once you do that and have one image named in the format you want the camera will do the rest.. erudolph Posted June 24, 2012 Author Share #13 Posted June 24, 2012 I've been trying to give a new starting # to my wife's V-Lux 40 and here's what happens: Say the folder on her card is labeled 100LEICA. I remove the card, put it in a card reader hooked to a computer, rename the folder 200LEICA and rename the first file L2000001. I then put the card back in her camera and take a picture. When I examine the card on the computer, my 200LEICA folder is still there with one image in it, but a new folder called 100LEICA has been created and the shot I just took is in it, labeled L1000001. I have also tried formatting the card at the end of the above procedure. Still I get the 100LEICA folder recreated. What am I doing wrong>>> ? jaapv Posted June 24, 2012 Share #14 Posted June 24, 2012 Jaap, what renaming scheme do you use? Tnx, Date, image (ingestion) count, -if needed (for specific shoots, like, Berlin 2012 for instance, or monochrome images) download into in specific folders, and II will sort into dated subfolders. The master folder is always the year divided into months and specific folders So [folder] 2012 --> [folder] May --> [subfolder] 23-05-2012 --> [image] 20120523_17889Or [folder]2012-..> [folder] birthday aunt Priscilla--> [subfolder]18-02-2012--->[image]20120218_16745 And I add keywords. wparsonsgisnet Posted June 26, 2012 Share #15 Posted June 26, 2012 Thanks, Jaap. I'm going to play with the software and wondered what the end product looked like for you. BTW, I notice that your avatar looks so much younger than mine. Must be the brand of leather.
