remik Posted June 12, 2012 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys- this is my first post to this forum. I recently purchased a Leica IIIf RD ST, serial number dates to 1955, along with a Summitar 50mm F2 from 1948 (both from KEH). Wow- I love this camera, so solid and beautifully put together. I've read a lot of comments about how finicky these are to use- but I have found it pretty straightforward, even though this is my first classic 35mm camera, and first rangefinder. Anyway, I've attached a few sample shots taken yesterday on FP4+ ISO 125 film, and developed at home in Ilfosol 3 (my first go at home-developing 35mm, although I've done 5 or so rolls of medium format before). Scanned with Epson 4490 flatbed. I'm reasonably happy with a few of them. On to my questions- these shots were taken without filter or hood, as I didn't have any yet. I ordered a Summitar 'barn-door' hood which arrived today, as well as a Summitar to E39 adapter. The barn-door hood fits onto my lens, but it is a bit of a push, and makes me a bit nervous- not sure that I can see that being an easy solution on days that I want to take the hood on/ off multiple times. Is there an easy screw-on/off E39 hood option that people would recommend- (yes, I've googled but got a wide variety of answers, and got a bit confused). Also- in terms of filters, I was thinking of a yellow for B/W and a UV for colour- am I better to look out for Summitar filters (I've seen some on the 'bay), or just go for E39 filters? If using the barn-door hood, I assume I'd be limited to Summitar-specific filters? So- if anyone has any recommendations for hood/ filter combos for the Summitar, I'd appreciate your input! cbretteville Posted June 12, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2012 Hi Remi, Welcome to the forum and congratualtions on your IIIf. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. I also have a barn door hood for my Summitar and decided to forget that. As you have a Summitar to E39 adapter I'd give something like this a try New Metal 39mm Screw-in Vented & Tilted Hood for Leica | eBay or this one New Metal Standard 39mm Screw-in Lens Hood + Cap E39 | eBay As for filters, buy a decent one that is multi coated, I personally prefer B+W, and use this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/95244-REG/B_W_66_023705_39mm_022_Medium_Yellow.html Cheers, Carl
philipus Posted June 12, 2012 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2012 Welcome Remi and congrats on the great kit! I have a Summitar which I got with my Leica II and which I love a lot. I use it mainly with my M6TTL because I prefer having a meter but occasionally I take it for a spin on the II. I also have the barndoor hood, in remarkably good state actually, but I don't use it because I find it unwieldy. So far, though, I haven't missed having a hood. As odd-looking cameras go a Barnack with the Summitar+hood and VIOOH is probably only surpassed by the same camera with VIOOH+TUVOO and the nice 2,8cm Hektor As for filters, Carl's advice is very good because you get a modern coated filter which minimises impact on the image quality. The Summitar filters are nice, however (I have four or five, yellows, green, orange and red - one is actually in black metal). I know it isn't of paramount concern, but the way they screw into the lens thread and sort of extends the barrel of the lens is really very nice. Still I bet modern filters are better. Edit: Sorry I should also answer your question The barndoor hood will work with the Summitar filters of course (I believ there are two types of hoods actually, clamp on with screw and clip on). My hood (clip on) also has a tight fit. You can also use the 12585H Summicron hood on the Summitar (and also other one's like the IROOA). Here's a thread over at RFF with lots of info. Edit 2: Here's another thread that might assist. Cheers Philip
eckart Posted June 12, 2012 Share #4 Posted June 12, 2012 Sorry Carl, but I am afraid that the standard E39 is no solution for the Summitar.I have got a Summitar and a yellow filter. This one is a very special one, because of the screw windings and the form. I will post some pictures - Welcome to the forum Remi, BTW. You must be lucky to find them on ebay or in collector's places.
cbretteville Posted June 12, 2012 Share #5 Posted June 12, 2012 Sorry Carl, but I am afraid that the standard E39 is no solution for the Summitar. Eckart, if you read Remi's post again you'll see he, like me, has something equivalent to an SNHOO which allows the use of std E39 filters on a Summitar. eckart Posted June 12, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 12, 2012 So here we are, as you see on the pictures there is neither the standard E39 screwmount nor the "normal" shape of the filter. The screw winding is the brass line on this picture.... Welcome, dear visitor! remik Posted June 13, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted June 13, 2012 Thanks for all your advice guys, I will try and pick up a screw-in E39 hood for ease of use, and those B+W filters look the goods! Remi
250swb Posted June 13, 2012 Share #10 Posted June 13, 2012 The Ebay shop Heavystar do a Summitar-to-E39mm filter adapter for not much money. I use one with my Summitar and use my 50mm Elmar M screw on metal hood, it is small and in keeping with the size and shape of the IIIf and Summitar combo. You don't need a great big barn door or a larger vented hood Remi, so I would look for something compact like that. Steve
