Leitz Summicron 90mm Cream Paint Finish

Recommended Posts

According to my Leica Preisführer 8th edition, which is from 2000 so likely pretty outdated, this lens with the removable hood is an R8 in terms of rarity and worth 2,200$/1,500£/3,500DM.

R8 is defined as "exhibition item" (R7 is "exceptionally rare" and R9 "almost unique"). Perhaps this is the basis for Red Dot's pricing.

Hello phillipus,

Since this is an unusual early version of a 90mm Summicron under any circumstances & it does include the shade:

If I was satisfied with using the optics of a SOOZI.

& if I was satisfied the lens was mechanically (including the screw to bayonet adapter) & optically sound.

& if the paint seemed to be done correctly even if it might have some minor subsequent bibbles & imperfections.

& if I would use a bright chrome 90mm Summicron.

Then: I would seriously consider buying it @ what would be a reasonable price for a chrome SOOZI or less.

Then, once it was mine, I would contact Leica, give them the serial # & ask them its history.

If it turns out it is a repainted not by Leitz/Leica chrome lens I would then consider which of the various directions I might travel in. To be continued if necessary.

Best Regards,

Michael

Please keep in mind: I am primarily a user & not a collector. But, I also try to watch a penny.

Thanks Michael. That's sounds like a sound way to approach buying it.

I already have two 90s (but I know some here who don't stop at that ;) ) and I was mainly very surprised to see a Leica lens in this colour. Looks a bit like those bright lenses sport photographers use!

Cheers

Philip

With regard to Michael's suggestion of contacting Leica with the serial number, for any information they may have, I would have thought that, with such an unusual item, Ivor at Red Dot might have done this already?

Please just note if not already done that this lens, originaly a SM was next modified in M mount, the red bulb witnessed it and next looks that the M mount was unglued/unscrewed.

Yes... the screw mount is clearly new (or "restored"), and even its fitting screws look cream-painted...

Hello Jean Claude & Luigi,

The SM to Bayonet conversion was noted in Post # 6 above.

What is the relevance of the existence of a locating dot in a factory conversion?

Would not a factory conversion of SM to Bayonet by permanantly attaching a 14098 have included a now necessary locating dot?

4 screws might help to hold the weight of a large 90mm Summicron better than just glue alone like on a 35mm Summicron.

Even if this was not a factory conversion: If the work is as good as a factory conversion (unknown @ this point):

So what?

User talking here - collector may OR MAY NOT disagree.

The pictures look quite good. Pictures (including here & now) are rarely a good thing to use to make a decision 1 way or the other for a variety of reasons. I would want to see this lens in person before making a decision of this type whether I was a user or a collector.

Best Regards,

Michael

Some picts to illustrate my comments above :

"Please just note if not already done that this lens, originaly a SM was next modified in M mount, the red bulb witnessed it and next looks that the M mount was unglued/unscrewed."
