Eric Posted June 7, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 7, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Forum members, Â My recently acquired 50mm Summilux, with which I felt so happy, sometimes refuses to open to its widest aperture... when I for example turn from f4 to f1.4 quickly it all works fine. when I turn from f1.8 to f1.4 there appears to be some resistance ... Just like, it doesn't feel like going to 1.4. back to f2 and then to f1.4 sometimes helps, but not always... My local Leica dealer sent the lens back to Solms. After four weeks, today I got it back. It was checked and guess what... Still the same problem. Â Is there anyone who has the same issues with this lens? Â And what is your advise, sent it back so Solms again? Â I thank you for your advice:)

wda Posted June 7, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted June 7, 2012 That is not normal. What does your dealer say about the handling? (I presume you have exercised the operation in an attempt to free it?)
IWC Doppel Posted June 8, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted June 8, 2012 I think you need to get an understanding about what Leica did and didn't do. On numerous occasions I have often found the reason something isnt fixed is because their was insufficient clarity on the specifics of the issue or a communication gap. I could talk for hours about bl**dy watches..... Â BTW my 50 summilux V2 is no different to any other lens I have
01af Posted June 8, 2012 Share #4  Posted June 8, 2012 ... today I got it back. It was checked and guess what ... still the same problem. [...] And what is your advise, sent it back so Solms again? When you send an item for repair to Leica Customer Service in Solms, they sometimes will keep it for a few alibi days, then return it without having worked on it. If you are serious about having the problem fixed then you're supposed to send it in for a second time. If not then they have saved themselves a lot of work. I guess that's their method of dealing with work overload.  The same happened to me several times recently (on various issues—and I always included very detailed descriptions of each issue). Double Negative Posted June 8, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted June 8, 2012 Definitely not normal; send it back.
Eric Posted June 8, 2012 Author Share #6  Posted June 8, 2012 Thanks for your replies!  This morning I brought the lens back to my local Leica dealer. The salesman who sold the lens it to me was back today and regretted the situation. He told me he knew some people at Leica Solms and would give them a call, explain them what happened and ask if the they could give this order some priority and make it work perfectly this time. So... I have good faith again  However, it still amazes me... my 1997 silver 50 mm summicron has never let me down. It is a beauty. A few months ago I bought this brand new 50 mm Summilux ASPH (which costs about three times more than I paid for the summicron) and then this happens. Is Leica quality and quality control decreasing? It almost seems like. Or... is it just bad luck?

farnz Posted June 8, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted June 8, 2012 ... Or... is it just bad luck? Just bad luck I think. I haven't had this problem with my 50/1.4 Summilux asph and I don't recall hearing about this problem either and you can bet your shiny, new, black boots that if there was a design or build problem we'd have heard about it on this forum by now. richfx Posted June 9, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted June 9, 2012 I experienced the same problem and returned my 50 Lux to Leica NJ for service. It was repaired within a day (the shutter blades were sticking a bit) and I've had no problems since. Rich
Eric Posted July 4, 2012 Author Share #10 Â Posted July 4, 2012 A brief update of my previous thread. Â This week it went back to my local dealer to hear about the progress. It appeared that the first time, my lens was never sent to Solms but to an intermediar. Therefore, I have to take back my words with regard to the repairment department at Solms. Today I was lucky to have my black 'Lux replaced by a silver version. The Black version is at Solms now but after two months of waiting for a repair my dealer was so kind to offer me a new version, which he only received last friday. The silver version is perfect. I love it lots. Feels much much better than the black one. Â I wonder ... are the silver versions better? I have 4 Leica lenses, all of them are silver and feel great. This black version of the 50 summilux is the first Leica lens that dissappointed me.
wda Posted July 4, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted July 4, 2012 Different materials and different weights. My black version is perfect and suits the black body.
