Leica M lens on Olympus OM-D

Yes, I have the 40/2 and have used it on the EM-5 and it focuses very easily. The reason is that in magnified view you can have image stabilization of the viewfinder and you can select the amount of magnification so it makes it easy because the image isn't jumping all over the place like it does on other cameras (XPRO-1 etc). I would still rather have focus peaking and hopefully on their first update they will offer that. IQ looks very good but it is close between the 40/2 and the Oly 45/1.8.

It is very easy, once configured a press on the 'function' button next to the shutter release brings up a magnified view and another press goes back to normal view. And the image does 'pop' into sharp relief with EVF's anyway so the magnified view isn't always needed. You can also use the touch screen LCD in the same way. And as John has also said there isn't a vast image quality difference between the best Olympus and Panasonic lenses and Leica lenses which means an OMD sits well with a Leica outfit.

Not every shot is in focus (for me, with this lens), but if you are patient, you may get fine results.

This is an average example, using an 50yrs old Elmarit 90mm 2.8. Not perfectly sharp though.

Don't forget to manually set the focal value of the lens in the IS menu.

The OM-D is a very fine camera...

Gary, defenitely try the mft Zuiko 45mm 1.8

A great lens!

I had the X1, X100 and E-P3 and imo the OM-D beats them easily.

The best: you can really go high ISO.

Will post more samples with Leica glass later.

tried out this camera in store yesterday and took some Shots on a SD card both in RAW and JPEG. results show fantastic dynamic range and good IQ though I have to say that I found the files when viewed in1:1 to be a little smeared giving a sort of pastel effect to large areas of colours. I'm no techie but I presume that this is due to the sensor filters which are missing on the M9 and my GXR. So good but with a slightly unreal look!!. Anyway If I could afford it I would probably get one but times are hard and I have no equipment left that I would want to sell to get it. hey-ho

There is no AA filter in the OMD, so I suspect the 'smearing' is coming from noise reduction. The question is how the store camera was set up for noise reduction, but it isn't needed much at all until over 2000 ISO.

Thanks for that. all the shots I took were at iso 320 so that is strange. maybe it is just a type of file I'm not used to. What really impressed me was the dynamic range and the standard zoom lens was not bad as well though it would be nice if it were a little faster.

David, did your pc use the correct interpreter for the rather new Olympus ORF files?

I never found your described phenomenon on mine yet. But I have the setting at low noise reduction.

The standard kit lens is a charm, imo. And I like the waterproof housing of both body and that lens.

To be honest I just took a few shots and then imported them into LR4.1 so I presume it has the right converter seeing this is Adobes latest version. Anyway it isn't really any scientific comment just an observation that wouldn't stop me buying this camera. In fact the only thing that is stopping me are finances and the worry about working with the micro four thirds format and the resulting excessive DOF. I too liked the kit lens though the upcoming panasonic 12-35 f2.8 looks like it could be a winner.

I agree. If it wasn't for the MFT format I would leap on this little gem but in some ways I already struggle with the 23mm lens on my X100 and the lack of being able to get any bokeh apart from close up work so the OM-D would be even worse
