I second Mr. Sink's sentiment. I've always been aware of the X1 but the cost was prohibitive. I picked up a very nice black used one for less than half the price of the X2. It is my favorite camera and I own an X-Pro1 and a Sony RX100. The for the money I paid, I feel the X1 is now a good value, I would be too critical if I paid what they want for an X2.

If AF is important to you and if faster AF has relevance, buy the X2. I also like the improvements to the wheels and pop up flash.

I started out with the X1 and am much happier with the X2 now. To me the much improved AF was the deciding factor.

I'm not seeing $1000 X1's. (maybe I'm not looking at the right sites?). I was thinking the demo model from my local dealer because of the full warranty, there for questions, etc. but $1000 does sound better :-)

they have them at Adorama and B&H for $1000...or less....in the used section.

I stopped at Adorama on Thursday and saw the X1 for the first time - lovely little camera and I am a little more than interested in one. I shoot with an M9 for personal stuff but sometimes all I want it something small and light that has good IQ. Am I crazy for even considering a couple year old camera for a bit under $1k?

i saw that X1 at Adorama last week.....the all black one right? It's a great deal...a cool camera IMO.

I paid over $2k for my M8 a few months ago....and it's much more out of date than an X1....so NO there is nothing wrong with buying an older Leica ;)

Why would one think an X1 purchase is crazy? I bought mine 8 months ago and have been using it full-time professionally along with my M3, IIIF and R4. It is a terrific camera and a perfect digital complement to my film Leicas.:)

My tuppence worth - IF much faster AF is important to you (and that would be a perfectly reasonable/ sensible purchase criteria) get the Panasonic GX1 with 20mm F1.7 G Lumix lens. Lens quality is excellent, and AF speed in low light is properly fast.

I bought one for my daughter the other day (with EVF) used for $675, and speed performance is the same as my previous Canon DSLR in a small form factor.

I love the X1, the simply extraordinary picture quality and integrity of it files, but I accept its ponderous low light AF. If I was to upgrade for more speed, I would not be mad enough to pay the price for a somewhat faster X2 AF in lowISH light - at least not before amusing myself with the act of setting light to large denomination notes at the bottom of the garden.

No way, I would upgrade to something that was able to combine high X1 like IQ with WAY faster operation. In the meantime I shall borrow my daughter's GX1 from time to time when I feel the need for speed.

I bought a used M8. Used digital Leica Ms sometimes need repairs. I just received a bill for $450 to remap a sensor with a bad pixel. Could have been worse, sensors cost more $. Point is - be prepared to pay a few dollars to keep a digital M going. I took a chance and I wont know for several years if my bet will pay off - or if I should have purchased a new M9?

I havent heard any bad news about X cameras. Perhaps they are lower financial risk?

Only you can decide if you really want a rangefinder.

Good luck

Dave,

I questioned it because it's a used camera that will cost $1000 - I hear a lot of comparisons to the M8 which is good and bad. Since the X2 was introduced I've read on this forum a lot of talk about improved AF but not a lot of OMG the AF is world's better and the IQ is X times better.

Like I mentioned I shoot with an M9 for personal work and I'm one of those guys that always wants a camera with me but doesn't necessarily want to carry my $10k M9 kit around either.

The X1 that I saw at Adorama was in great shape, no idea of actuations, has a 90 day warranty and supposedly all the stuff it originally shipped with for about $1000. Very tempting but as I only had about 15 minutes to play with it I am lacking for information.

Since I saw this thread already open - I posed the question. And the big driving force is $1000 for a used fancy P&S or buy something for less new if the overall reaction was not to purchase it because of XYZ...

Hope that makes sense? :o

Thanks!

Jeff

Is Leica charging you $450 to remap the camera or to do a CLA?

I had the same problem a couple of months ago. I got a 600 euros quote because Leica wanted to change my slightly scratched screen and bottom plate. I answered back that I only wanted the pixel to be remapped and the quote dropped to 110 euros.

That sounds a whole lot more reasonable.

A short rhyme

X2, overpriced but very nice.

I have an X2 and an X100. I prefer using the X2 most of the time. Was the X2 worth the money? To me, yes. The X2 is getting more use than any of my cameras.

Kind of, I think it should be free since 99% of cameras deal with hot pixels mapping through camera software (or do not generate any streaks on the pictures at least). Bad design from Leica that puts the cost on us and let us bear with at least a month with camera on repair. My M8 went to Solms already twice for that issue, this is not acceptable in my opinion.

Good question. My quote was verbal from Leica NJ last week. I sent the camera in last week Monday and I was confirming that they had the camera. I was quoted that $450 was billable to me for repair. A detailed breakdown was not provided. However, nothing was out of adjustment or wrong with the camera when I sent it in - other than a bad pixel. I will update when the written quote arrives in the mail.
