Question for you peeps...I took a batch of photos at a jubilee bashh yesterday, and when i went to download, quite a few went on the card....any ideas ?? I'm using a Sandisk Extreme 8GB class 10 card...please help :)

a) Use a file recovery utility on the card.

-- My purchases of Sandisk Extreme cards iirc came with a program for such tasks.

B) Were you experiencing any low battery issues while you were shooting? I lost some images that didn't get to the card while my battery was weak on one occassion, but I usually have both batt's charged and avail so don't have much experience with it as an issue.

Hope you get your images back.

Camera has image review so you can check along the way. Check with playback to see if they are recorded. Do not turn camera off until the light stops.

Can also be a problem with downloading, reader, cable or computer problem.

Download from camera directly.

Clean card contacts. Maybe slide into the camera a few times when cleaner is still wet.

I have seen computers where the image gets lines, yet when downloading to a different computer they are gone. This is a computer or cable problem.

I do not use Sandisk card because they are frequently counterfeit . Real Sandisk are a good product, but you can not see the difference.

Format the card in the computer, fat 32, then again in the camera before you use for new pics. Never delete pics. reformat in camera.

After the shots were taken, they were on review..and i do sometimes delete after taking them. this has happened before :(, the cards were bought of Amazon, I've just bought a Lexar so gonna see how that goes. I also get "the card is full", when nothing is on the card...really strange

Cheers for the reply :)

Just a theory on my part, but it could potentially be you need to reinstall the firmware.

A software issue could be mucking things up. It seems logical to look investigate firmware if you are having 'general' issues with the camera outside of file writing.

Still doesn't rule out you having a bum usb cable, bum sd card, or dirty contacts, or dirty card reader, or all of the above. Even none of the above for that matter.

Card is full means the directory or table of contents with directions to files is full. Not necessarily the storage locations on the card. When you delete an image, you tell the card that space is free to accept new data as an overwrite. It does not remove data which is why recovery works until you overwrite. Plus it leads to fragmented files just like a pc.

Reformat cleans the directory, and instructs the card to start the next recording from a new point so as not to "wear" the same locations.

I would advise you to download, reformat in camera and never erase an image unless you are out of storage and new a few more images on your last card.

Amazon probably goes for cheapest price or a dealer with best offer. Not necessarily trustworthy. The Chinese counterfiters are very very cleaver. The outsides look perfect, the insides are far less quality.

I buy Lexar from B&H when they have Christmas sales.. Buy medium to large capacity and dedicate them to a particular camera. You will be better off in the long run.

Or, the camera has reached L999999

999999 ? That would be one-in-the-eye for the M8 reliability doubters ?

Or, the camera has reached L999999. That can happen if the file has accidentally been reset to a high number.

Yes this was an undesirable 'feature' of one of the firmware updates (I forget which one). If this is the problem and you want to reset the numbering then follow these steps:

Resetting Leica M8 File Numbering

1. Set the Picture Number in the menu to "Standard".

2. Format the SD card in camera.

3. Reset the File Number in the menu. It actually says “Reset fold. No”, that is the one you want.

4. Set Picture Number back to "Continuous"

5. Take one image

6. Shut off camera, remove SD card and place in card reader attached to a computer.

7. Access the image in your Finder or Explorer (Mac or PC); rename the image number to whatever file number/image number you want. I would suggest Lyyyxxxx, with "y" being your preferred folder number (See Note Below) and "x" being the frame number you want to start with. (You are making these changes to the file name on the card in the card reader.)

NOTE

If you want to change the first or second digit of the L100 (Lyyy above) in the file name, like to L200 or 120 or 220, then you have to change the folder name also.

The directory/folder structure on the card when in a card reader is [Drive Letter]:\DCIM\100LEICA\. You need to change the 100LEICA to whatever you want the file number to start with. Like if you want it to be L200xxxx then you need to rename that folder to 200LEICA. If you want L120 then you need to change that folder name to 120LEICA. It would look like this [Drive Letter]:\DCIM\120 or 200LEICA.

8. Properly remove card from card reader and return to camera.

9. Turn the camera on and press "Play". The file will now display with newly renamed folder and file number. (Use "Info" to see this data.)

10. Expose another image to confirm and check file numbers.

11. Format SD card, and you are good to go from that point on.

Pete.

Pheww, that's good. It can only help to bolster the M8's reputation.

Maybe the card speed information should go in the FAQ ?

I'd theorize that the interface rom chip on his uber fast sd card is using an interface protocol to new for his M8 to cope with properly.

-or-

his computer and/or card reader had a wrong bios/preference settings to interface with his fast sd card properly.

Be nice to hear back from the OP with a clarification of exactly what he learned at the Mayfair store.

I always take the card out of the M8 or any other camera i have to upload pics to the Mac. As soon as i told them about the issue, they new straight away, and gave me a 20mps Sandisk ultra..since then i have had no errors at all. All the Mayfair store said that that the M8 was intermittent on these uber fast cards which is a shame as i can only get 188 shots on the 2GB cards (shooting DNG at 10MB), so i just bought some more of the same and sent the fast Lexar and Sandisk cards back to Amazon.
