The prospect of obtaining a black copy of the 50mm Summilux is almost hopeless, and now it is possible to get a copy in silver, but that's what I think - will it look silly on a black Leica M9, and will i in the long term regret my purchase of silver model?

Dealers here in Denmark is reasonable for Leica lenses, compared with the rest of the world.

And also seemed to have read that the production of M lenses were increased. so maybe I just have to wait or make an order on a black copy of the 50mm Summilux dealer

Black copies are more readily available in the US during the last few months, the chrome is nearly impossible. Consider moving?:)

Color combinations might look silly when first viewed, within a short time I get accustomed to the look and don't give it much thought.

I wanted a chrome but purchased black due to availability and as I age the black version numbers are more legible.

Good luck, awesome lens in any color.

I have a chrome one on my black M9...doesn't matter much to me when I'm shooting as I can't see it. Heck of a lens....just remember chrome will be heavier.

I also got a chrome one for my chrome body last week. There must be recent batch of chrome ones made.

I have a chrome one used on my chrome M8, chrome is heavier.

I am considering to buy a black paint M9 or M9p. So I am kind of regret on the choice of buying chrome which make me wait longer than black one.

Just my humble opinion but black goes well on the Silver or black bodies. Silver does not looks so great on a black body. When I was waiting on the black lens I was offered silver. I know several people above me turned down the silver. If you know you'll always have a silver body I do think it looks better with a silver lens. I like to keep the weight down though.

Personally, I prefer chrome lenses on chrome bodies and black lenses on black bodies.

However, in use I prefer the black because it's less tiring. It's lighter and the focus ring doesn't feel as stiff as the chrome.

But the chrome feels great in the hand: the build quality is superb. All my bodies are chrome so I kept the chrome version.

looks fine, though this is a matter of taste

the chrome version is heavier & has a stiff focus ring that takes some working in

mine is silky smooth now

I love it

Well according to B+H website the weight of the 50mm Summilux black and silver are the same. Look it up under the specifications.

I just got a black from The Pro Shop in FL 2 weeks ago. Before that I noticed B&H sold out of the chrome model and then had a few blacks left. I wonder if the new 50/2.0 APO is taking a little demand away from the 50/1.4 model?

The 50 Summilux Asph in silver is still brass (unlike the 28mm Summicron and later silver designs which are anodized aluminium) and therefore it's heavier. The mechanics are very much the same, it's just the outer shell that's different (the focus threads are always brass).

IMHO, take the silver one, strangely, second-hand value seems higher and it looks great on black and silver cameras. 100g extra won't kill your back...

B&H is incorrect. The chrome-plated brass 50 Summilux asph weighs 460g and the black anodised aluminium version weighs 335g.

RFF has a useful thread comparing black bodies and chrome lenses (I don't know of such a thread here).

I used to have a black one on my silver MP. I replaced it last month with the silver version. Much different in the handling (due to weight), but I got used to it in a day. It's operation is smoother (both aperture ring and focusing), perhaps due to the weight.

That's correct. I weighted both of them during the brief period of time I had both last month.

This is due to sample variation and the adjustment of individual lenses. My black asph focuses more smoothly than my pre-asph chrome (which obviously doesn't have a floating element). The aperture ring on the asph does, however, have slightly more distinct stops than the pre-asph. In that sense it is much closer to my 90 Elmarit-M the aperture ring of which has very distinct stops. Personally I prefer a smooth focus ring and not so smooth aperture ring.
