My M8 shutter just died after just 17,000 actuations (compared to my old nikon D80 with 150,000), sent the camera to germany (cost 100 Euro there and back), got a reply from leica after 3 weeks saying it will cost me about 1,000 Euros to repair.

Does this sound right to anyone ?

Did anyone experience this and got the same cost ?

What did you do when it did ?

Thanks everyone

Sounds a bit high for just a shutter -there must be more wrong with the camera. Anyway, you will get a year's guaranty for the whole camera with the repair afaik.

dhob, Welcome to the forum!

It does seem rather high, but I do not know the extent of the damage. Did you own it from new? Any excesses in its life-style, such as considerable firing on 'C', for example? Or other abusive treatment? (I don't mean this unkindly, but excessively heavy or extreme usage could contribute to failure)

10x,

As someone that used an Nikon and shot in excess of 200,000 shots I really wouldn't call 17,000 excessive

Never used C mode, single only.

The camera wasn't new but I've had the shutter + drive replaced under warranty a couple of years ago, as well as the CCD for banding issues, so having it breakdown so soon is ridiculous !

Unfortunately one of the things about rangefinders is that the shutter is quite open and close to the mouth of the camera, no mirror in front, so it is more likely to catch a piece of grit than an SLR shutter which is deep down and protected. The shutter itself is of similar quality.

Did you send direct to Solms? Sounds as if you did. If so, your estimate includes everything necessary to bring the camera up to current standard.

The price might be higher going through a dealer, since dealers often tack on a bit more profit than Leica's repair price allows them.

Unfortunately that is the exact reason I sold my M8 - early shutter failure. They wanted $1500 in NJ for replacement and I took the stance that was too much and sold my M8. Poor me, I've been missing that camera body for over two years now and have spent untold amounts on other cameras over what fixing the M8 would have cost me. You now have the advantage of my experience - use it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Also had the shutter replaced in an M8 with very low actuations at the cost of about $700.00 US , with only the repaired items being covered under the year warranty ....

I agree about never using it in C mode as that is when mine bit the dust .... It is frustrating getting such a high quote to repair . On a side note ,sometimes your insurance will cover the repair ....did not even think about this . My wife asked our Home owners insurance agent and sure enough they covered most of the repair ....

I had faced the same thing and ended up paying for upgrade rather than repair. I am more happy for a more reliable shutter and better M8 . The price was too high but guess It is worth every penny that hit my pocket harder to keep this camera working. Amazing results. Cost was about £800.

my shutter died after about 42.000 actuations, i've send it (from amsterdam) to solms march 19 and got it back june 3,

the invoice contained the following:

necessary labour cost €411.78

- exchange shutter

- adjust sensor

- adjust rangefinder

- clean rangefinder

- adjustment of all parts

- cleaning and end control

necessary parts

- shutter, cpl €131.72

- additional labour costs €68.54

including handling & package (€40) and tax (19%) the final amount was €775.93

the additional labour costs were for the recommended replacement of the backside

you might think there is a correlation between the time of repair (two and a half months) and the price - don't park your camera at solms

although i know more people who had a broken shutter, sadly they are all (digital) leica owners,

the price of repair seems ridiculous, but there is no choice unless you want to sell all your leica stuff, but better do it after the repair with the one year warranty

i imagine that there is a risk of dust and grit when you change lenses which i do a lot (i always keep the backside of my lenses and the inside of the back cap clean),

but it happens also with people who have one lens, so i guess the quality of the shutter is not on par with the rest of the camera (as is the sensor that also caused a disproportionate amount of complaints)

needless to say, the camera came back like new

I guess I must have been lucky, because I got the same plus sensor cleaning for Euro 250 less. BTW I seldom change lenses, nor take my camera to the beach, and still faced a destroyed shutter
