too old to care Posted July 15, 2012 Share #23 Posted July 15, 2012 £2000 Pete Ouch! Off my Christmas list now. Wayne
Stealth3kpl Posted July 15, 2012 Share #24 Posted July 15, 2012 Well, it might be that they don't really know the RRP and are hedging their bets. It could be that once things settle it's more like the £1500 mark. Pete
wattsy Posted July 15, 2012 Share #25 Posted July 15, 2012 £2000 I'm not surprised by that. If the quality is good, the price is fine.

kanzlr Posted July 16, 2012 Share #27 Posted July 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pretty much what I expected, given the price of the reflecta. Well, my Coolscan has to die first
andybarton Posted July 16, 2012 Share #28 Posted July 16, 2012 I'd rather have a second hand Imacon for that kind of money
wattsy Posted July 16, 2012 Share #29 Posted July 16, 2012 I'd rather have a second hand Imacon for that kind of money Can you buy a second hand Imacon for that kind of money?
andybarton Posted July 16, 2012 Share #30 Posted July 16, 2012 There's one on eBay now for less than two grand. Two and a half for another. To be fair, they are SCSI models, so would need a kludge to get them to the FireWire port... Maybe the Plustek isn't so bad after all Will be interesting to see what the results are like
kanzlr Posted July 16, 2012 Share #31 Posted July 16, 2012 and how fast is the Imacon at scanning say...12 135 negatives at once, like the Plustek seems to be capable of?
andybarton Posted July 16, 2012 Share #32 Posted July 16, 2012 Speed isn't everything. I have never scanned a whole film in my life. Other might, of course, but most people still using film are not likely to.
wattsy Posted July 16, 2012 Share #33 Posted July 16, 2012 To be fair, they are SCSI models, so would need a kludge to get them to the FireWire port... I thought that might be the case. I guess it is not difficult or expensive to buy a really old Mac G4 (or even G3) with a SCSI card and use it as a dedicated scanning machine. If you do a lot of scanning such a set-up would make a lot of sense because an Imacon for two grand seems like a lot of scanner for your money. Personally, I don't do enough scanning to justify even that expense or have the physical room to have old Macs sitting around.
biglouis Posted July 16, 2012 Share #34 Posted July 16, 2012 Expensive but very tempting. I get pretty good results from my V700 but (a) I would like something which is dedicated and ( smaller footprint. Louis

Other might, of course, but most people still using film are not likely to. hm...thats what I do all the time. Scan the whole roll, store the files at a temporary location and later, when I have time to examine them, I delete the non-keepers

philipus Posted September 30, 2012 Share #37 Posted September 30, 2012 I also scan whole rolls (Coolscan V), with Vuescan set to "Print" quality the process is quite quick.
swamiji Posted September 30, 2012 Share #38 Posted September 30, 2012 Why do you think £2000? Nothing else they make is anywhere near that price.
andybarton Posted September 30, 2012 Share #39 Posted September 30, 2012 Because that's how much they're being sold for, as per the link on the earlier post.
plasticman Posted September 30, 2012 Share #40 Posted September 30, 2012 From what I understand, the UK price is quite a bit higher than the European list price - so simply import from Germany or France? Naturally the US price appears to be much lower (as usual) but then there's import duties and shipping to add. Must say I'm really glad to see samples from this scanner at last - even if they're just a couple of low-res images. It means the scanner isn't just vaporware anymore! The Plustek development people have made very big claims for the scanner though - saying that it was closer to an Imacon than a Nikon LS9000 - so they have a lot to prove when we finally get to see some real samples. Just very very glad that there's a new 120 scanner out there if/when my 9000 dies.
