Giottos or AC-MAXX screen protector

I do not think you are likely to break a M9 screen but they do seem to be made of a rather soft plastic that scratches easily. Some other makes - Pentax, Nikon, Canon have screens made of either glass or a harder plastic so protectors are probably unnecessary.

There have been some reports of glass Giotto protectors breaking which is a bit worrying as I am sure broken glass cannot do the underlying screen any good. I have not seen any reports of the AC-MAXX protectors breaking.

Thanks. That is what I was curious about. I'm personally not concerned so much about any scratching, but wondered about breakage and overall durability in respect to cracking/breaking. Many modern plastics are much stronger than glass. I'm going to go with the premise that the screens are not overly susceptible to breakage, but that they are certainly not immune to scratches.

You might want to get a quote from Leica on replacing a scratched screen, and compare it to what Nikon and Canon charge on their $5000+ bodies. A scratched screen would almost certainly affect resale value and marketability if that is any concern to you.

The display screen for the Nikon D3s/D3x is USD 28.05 for the factory replacement part. It's also an easy do-it-yourself job (unless you're faint of heart.) You simply heat up the display with a hairdryer and lift out the damaged screen. It's basically the same process as removing a Giotto screen. The new part comes with the screen, adhesive, and adhesive template. It takes about a 1/2 hour to do. It's the same with the Canon 5D. All camera LCD displays have covers that are pretty much the same in respect to their construction and removal/install.

The process should be identical for a Leica M9. Although I'm not sure I'd want to know what they charge for the replacement part. And I imagine their labor charge will also be very high despite that it's a simple job.

It seems like you should be right, as in fact I recall reading where some people had the screen come off when they used a hairdryer to r&r a cracked Giottos. But, I also recall reading that Leica said it requires some major disassembly and/or they don't sell the screen as a separate part for DIY replacement. So not sure what the current status is.

I've used Giottos for four years on my M9. A small chip on the bottom edge of the protector is the only issue I've experienced.

Giottos replaced the screen, but I never bothered to swap the new one in for the original since I don't mind the chip. No complaints overall - it's made of 6 layers of Schott glass and has done the job well.

I've been using Giotto's for several years without any complaints. I agree with every positive comment. Since several cameras have the same size screen, some screen protectors you get may have another camera's name on it in very small print. It never bothered me on those cameras since I know what camera I am using. But if you are finicky,

.......well, what can I say? In the case of my Giotto protector on my M9, it just says Giotto with a part # on it and Schott Glass.
