Bleeding edge sharpness, which of your lenses?

Well, like other users here i would have to say that all of my Leica lenses are truly amazing. But the lens that stands out for me is my 75 ASPH APO. Lovely lens... so fortunate to have the privilege of owning such a nice piece of photographic gear.

None of my M or R lenses have MTF charts similar to those of the 50/2 asph. Great glass like 50/1.4 asph, 90/2 asph, 75/2 asph or 28/2 asph don't play in the same league from this standpoint.

I'd really like to have someone take the same shot with the 50/1.4 ASPH (and perhaps the 75 APO too, with camera position adjusted to make the framing identical) and the new 50 APO, print them to 24x36", show them un-labeled to as many people as they want with whatever credentials they deem appropriate to judge image quality, and see how many times the 50 Summicron APO image is picked as being the best. Shoot with a M-Mono if you think the M9's resolution will mask differences, or use Tech Pan (or equivalent) if you still think digital doesn't out-resolve film. Just let's see some data that indicates there's a real-world advantage to this lens over its nearest competitor at half the cost. Not that I'm saying that having bragging-rights to the MTF-chart-topper isn't a legitimate reason for buying. We're all entitled to our own set of priorities.

Very true, owned several Leica, Zeiss and voigtlander lens, only the Biogon 25 is so unbelievablly sharp across the whole frame wide open, the voigtlander extreme sharp in the center, but the corners...

Leica lens is not only about the extreme sharpness though.

Indeed; this is one of the sharpest lenses I know of. Even wide open, but especially in the butter zone - ridiculous from corner to corner. Love it. :)

Why do you say this to me? Fact is amongst 30+ Leica lenses of mine there is only one whose MTF charts are close to those of the 50/2 asph. I did not say anything else. Just a fact. A disturbing fact perhaps but a mere fact.

The perceived difference in sharpness between the 50/2 APO-Summicron-M ASPH and the 50/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH or the 75/2 APO-Summicron-M ASPH or <insert lens> is to me a bit like the difference between a toothbrush that has 200 bristles and one that has 210 bristles: yes I know that one brush has more bristles but both are going to clean my teeth equally well and it's difficult to imagine what benefit the extra 10 bristles could make.

Ahh, scratch n' sniff. Great for those lovely landscapes and flower shots.

I'm rather proud to have produced the first Scratch-n-Sniff website when NCSA Mosiac first became available. Nobody thought it was funny. Still not funny.

Not so much for street. :D

Nor porn. (no smiley for disgust available)

LOL! It's only funny if you're there to see a n00b actually try to scratch-and-sniff the screen in person. :D

And, err, yeah... Heh. Or fish markets (same thing?)
