Advertisement Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Hi Peter H, Take a look here Bleeding edge sharpness, which of your lenses?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Peter_S Posted May 18, 2012 Share #22 Â Posted May 18, 2012 Of the few lenses I have tried - definitely ZM Biogon 2.8/25mm.
Studio58 Posted May 18, 2012 Share #23 Â Posted May 18, 2012 Well, like other users here i would have to say that all of my Leica lenses are truly amazing. But the lens that stands out for me is my 75 ASPH APO. Lovely lens... so fortunate to have the privilege of owning such a nice piece of photographic gear. bocaburger Posted May 18, 2012 Share #25 Â Posted May 18, 2012 None of my M or R lenses have MTF charts similar to those of the 50/2 asph. Great glass like 50/1.4 asph, 90/2 asph, 75/2 asph or 28/2 asph don't play in the same league from this standpoint. Â I'd really like to have someone take the same shot with the 50/1.4 ASPH (and perhaps the 75 APO too, with camera position adjusted to make the framing identical) and the new 50 APO, print them to 24x36", show them un-labeled to as many people as they want with whatever credentials they deem appropriate to judge image quality, and see how many times the 50 Summicron APO image is picked as being the best. Shoot with a M-Mono if you think the M9's resolution will mask differences, or use Tech Pan (or equivalent) if you still think digital doesn't out-resolve film. Just let's see some data that indicates there's a real-world advantage to this lens over its nearest competitor at half the cost. Not that I'm saying that having bragging-rights to the MTF-chart-topper isn't a legitimate reason for buying. We're all entitled to our own set of priorities. Double Negative Posted May 18, 2012 Share #26 Â Posted May 18, 2012 Of the few lenses I have tried - definitely ZM Biogon 2.8/25mm. Â Indeed; this is one of the sharpest lenses I know of. Even wide open, but especially in the butter zone - ridiculous from corner to corner. Love it.

LotharZhou Posted May 18, 2012 Share #28 Â Posted May 18, 2012 Very true, owned several Leica, Zeiss and voigtlander lens, only the Biogon 25 is so unbelievablly sharp across the whole frame wide open, the voigtlander extreme sharp in the center, but the corners... Â Leica lens is not only about the extreme sharpness though. Â Indeed; this is one of the sharpest lenses I know of. Even wide open, but especially in the butter zone - ridiculous from corner to corner. Love it.
LotharZhou Posted May 18, 2012 Share #29 Â Posted May 18, 2012 Very interesting to see how the Biogon 25 performs on the new MM. Must be magic!
lct Posted May 18, 2012 Share #30 Â Posted May 18, 2012 ... Not that I'm saying that having bragging-rights to the MTF-chart-topper isn't a legitimate reason for buying. We're all entitled to our own set of priorities. Why do you say this to me? Fact is amongst 30+ Leica lenses of mine there is only one whose MTF charts are close to those of the 50/2 asph. I did not say anything else. Just a fact. A disturbing fact perhaps but a mere fact.

farnz Posted May 18, 2012 Share #33 Â Posted May 18, 2012 The perceived difference in sharpness between the 50/2 APO-Summicron-M ASPH and the 50/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH or the 75/2 APO-Summicron-M ASPH or <insert lens> is to me a bit like the difference between a toothbrush that has 200 bristles and one that has 210 bristles: yes I know that one brush has more bristles but both are going to clean my teeth equally well and it's difficult to imagine what benefit the extra 10 bristles could make. Â Pete.

I'm rather proud to have produced the first Scratch-n-Sniff website when NCSA Mosiac first became available. Nobody thought it was funny. Still not funny.  Not so much for street.  Nor porn. It's only funny if you're there to see a n00b actually try to scratch-and-sniff the screen in person.  And, err, yeah... Heh. Or fish markets (same thing?)
