wparsonsgisnet Posted March 6, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted March 6, 2007 I, too, really like this lens. It's warm and really isolates the part of the image that is selected (focused upon). Â I find it very appealing, whereas I never felt this way about the 'Nocti. I know they share a grandparent somewhere, but they really make different images in my view. Â 'Course, the 'Nocti was easier to focus ... momopod: don't leave home without it.

SteveP Posted March 6, 2007 Share #26 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Didn't I read somewhere that the 75/1.4 has less DoF wide open than the Noctilux @ f1?
kidigital Posted March 6, 2007 Share #27  Posted March 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Steve, I haven't done the math, but my observation is that the 75/1.4 probably has less DOF wide open than the Noctilux. Although I don't have too much of a problem focusing the 75lux wide open, I usually am more accurate with the Noctilux at 1.0. Here are a couple of recent shots with the 75lux. I'll add to the chorus and state that is one of my favorites also.  Kurt Welcome, dear visitor! Â I always found it easy to focus with the 'Nocti, shooting dance from the wings for example. I cannot do this with the 75 'lux. That 3cm accounted for a great deal! zapp Posted March 6, 2007 Share #31 Â Posted March 6, 2007 How are we doing on the R80 which is the brother in design of the M75 lux? After 27 years of production an update would be welcome (Zeiss, Nikon and Canon have improved a lot on their wide aperture 85 mm designs in the last 27 years), although you never know if discontinued may mean discontinued and not replaced for good. Similarly the R35 lux is 27 years odl and could do with a workover. With a discontinued DMR at the same time any R discussion is obselete for some time. carstenw Posted March 6, 2007 Share #32 Â Posted March 6, 2007 What would you want to be improved on the 80 Lux? I found that lens was as close to perfect as any lens I have ever owned. Awe-inspiring look wide open, amazing sharpness stopped down. It is like two lenses in one.
frc Posted March 6, 2007 Share #33  Posted March 6, 2007 It seems to be a sport to focus fast lenses at minimal distance......... For portraits I prefer the Elmarit 90, nice shalow depth of feild and a gorgeous oof area. IMHO it is wrong to think of the lux 75 as only a fast lens, stopped down it still has it's unique caracter, sharp and defined but with a painterly extra which I find very difficult to describe. On or near the stage when in use in the theatre or music-club I'm mostly 3 or more meters away from the subject and everything moves, either use a flash or live with motion- and focus-blur. Sorry for my tsunami of pictures lately on numerous threads but a pic tells morre th....... People asking whether to buy the lux or cron, same fov, for the rest totaly different, what can you say ( sharpness, a stop more, weight, size, goof bokeh, ???????? ). The lux 75 isn't substituted by the cron and will live on as one of the Leica classics. Welcome, dear visitor! grober Posted March 6, 2007 Share #34 Â Posted March 6, 2007 The 75 'Lux is too heavy and too difficult to accurately focus wide open, IMHO. I sold mine as soon as the 75 'Cron was announced and bought one as soon as they started to ship. I think the Summicron, either on a film body or the M8, is much easier to handle and more physically balanced than the 75 'Lux. (Of course, the M8 sensor's more tolerant depth of field characteristics might solve my focusing problem when shooting the Lux wide open, eh? I'll never know.) Â Oddly enough while I'm waiting for the 49mm IR-cut filter promised by Leica and needed for my 75mm Summicron, I haven't used the lens on my M8 but am enjoying the "re-discovery" of my three 50mm lenses, now effectively 67mm lenses. I'm finding that on the M8, a 28 + 50 pair of lenses can handle about 90% of my photos. Â The 75mm Summilux may be missed by some but not by me for the reasons already mentioned. This is with black and white film, but it is my most used lens on the M8. Once I adjust the rangefinder, perhaps the 50 ASPH will be used more often, but the APO75 and the 50 are great with that camera. (Kurt and FRC, those are great shots!)
carstenw Posted March 15, 2007 Share #36  Posted March 15, 2007 I just picked up a 1st generation 75 Summilux today. I preferred it to the new version, due to its removable hood, wider aperture ring, and smoother focusing. Here are two pictures of it without and with hood, on my M6, and three test portraits I took of colleagues today. The first portrait is especially great, and proves that I can focus at 2m wide open, and still nail the eyes. The second one proves that I am not consistent. What a great lens, and a worthy replacement to my 80 Lux-R. Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted March 15, 2007 Share #37 Â Posted March 15, 2007 Carsten, one word: 1.25 Okular! A miracle. But when one wears glasses, the Megaperls 1.35 (forbidden in Germany and USA on patent grounds) is even better, because it has a dioptery adjustment. I got mine today and exchanged it for the Leica one. I cannot see any quality difference, but the 24 lines are a bit more difficult.
kidigital Posted March 15, 2007 Share #38 Â Posted March 15, 2007 Carsten, I am very glad to see that you went with the 75lux vs. the 75cron. I know how much you agonized over the decision. But, knowing how much you liked the 80lux, I knew you'd be unable to resist seeing the light (aperature vs. weight). Â Kurt
carstenw Posted March 15, 2007 Share #39 Â Posted March 15, 2007 It is less the aperture than the look, to be honest. Â This 75 Lux is not as large as the newer version, and really fits well in my hands. I am so happy I bought this. I convinced myself back and forth several times between 75 Lux and 75 Cron, but this lens is really sharp. The only minor downside is the CA wide open, but I can live with that for the magic that it gives back. Anyway, at f/2 it is already better, and very sharp. I will try the 75 Cron one day again, but this lens really settles it. It also settles my Noctilux lust. I don't need it. I just ordered the CV21/4 and once that arrives, the only missing lens for me (for now) is the 28 Cron Asph, which I will get with my 30% off deal. I have now: Â CV15, CV21, (28 Cron Asph), 35 Cron Asph, 50 Lux Asph, 75 Lux, 135/2.8 I, 280/4.8-V Â Quite sufficient I might swap out the 135/2.8 I for a 135/2.8 II, if I find that I use it a lot. I may buy a dedicated macro lens. Then again, I might not. This is quite a system, and the cool thing is that if I throw 21/35/75 in the bag, I have 95% of my shots covered, at less than 1.5 kg. Fantastic! Â I still miss the 80 Lux, but the construction of the 1st generation 75 Lux is much nicer to my mind than the later ones, so I think I can sleep well at night now again. Â Ah! I just remembered: Â Does anyone know of a good solution for a lens cap for the 75 Lux generation I ? The one it came with was a push-on and would fall off, but the one I have now is the same as the newer version has, except that due to the missing built-in hood, the edges stick out. I am afraid I will knock it off as I walk down the street.
Eoin Posted March 15, 2007 Share #40 Â Posted March 15, 2007 Congratulations on your new addition Carsten, I'm green with envy, the more I see the images from this lens the more I want to replace my 75 AA with it. I just can't get with the look of the AA. Enjoy it!, I'm sure you will.
