mmradman Posted May 14, 2012 Share #41 Â Posted May 14, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Current global camera sales 0.25% Â Target for global camera sales 1%, to achieve this means selling more and it is not going to be on price but on volume. Â Traditional Leica customer generally doesn't want video capability but represents only 0.25% of the global camera buyer pool than rest of the future customers will have to be attracted by other "cool" features like video. So like it or not video has a place in Leica expansion strategy.
Advertisement Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Hi mmradman, Take a look here M10 at Photokina with video capabilites. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ecar Posted May 15, 2012 Share #42  Posted May 15, 2012 Fully agree. I suspect the main customer target of the über-quality, über-price strategy also wants video...  After all, a dual offering including an improved M9 (priced about 500-1,000$ more than the M9-P) for the traditionalists and a new M-based design with more electronics (and a 10,000$+ price tag) for the "new" customer target makes marketing sense. And several people would probably buy both...  The EVIL and a new range of lenses would come later, once the Wetzlar factory is up and running (in this regard, hiring/training may well be the most limiting factor for a quick production ramp-up), and would then help Leica reach their 1% market share objective. jaques Posted May 15, 2012 Share #43 Â Posted May 15, 2012 It is frightening: after Photokina there will be leica lovers walking around with an m10 and an M9m- and an M9 as their back up for both. Waltzing around with some 25K in camera bodies and another 30K/40K in lenses... and some of these chaps will not be making better pictures than an inspired photographer with a Canon Kiss SLR and plastic kit zoom lens... Â Jaap: I will take you up on the sweepstake- and I sincerely hope you are right and I am wrong as I am almost certain that the new camera will cost around 11K usd
Ecar Posted May 15, 2012 Share #44 Â Posted May 15, 2012 ... and some of these chaps will not be making better pictures than an inspired photographer with a Canon Kiss SLR and plastic kit zoom lens... Quite true. But they will feel better, whatever the (highly subjective) reasons. What's the price of that?
rosuna Posted May 15, 2012 Share #45 Â Posted May 15, 2012 Any M-based camera with "more electronics" and without optical viewfinder and rangefinder would be cheaper to produce.
rramesh Posted May 15, 2012 Share #46 Â Posted May 15, 2012 It's interesting to note that the Leica X2 EVF is being sold in the US for $524.95 when the exact same Olympus VF-2 made by Epson is being sold for $249. Â The Leica logo sure carries a heft price tag. Like double.
wattsy Posted May 15, 2012 Share #47 Â Posted May 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's interesting to note that the Leica X2 EVF is being sold in the US for $524.95 when the exact same Olympus VF-2 made by Epson is being sold for $249. rramesh Posted May 15, 2012 Share #48 Â Posted May 15, 2012 Does anyone know if you can just use the Olympus branded EVF on the X2 and save the best part of 300 bucks? Specs seem identical though Leica EVF is not shipping yet. Product made by Epson with Olympus hot-shoe adoption. Means Panasonic M43 viewfinders will not work. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1038&message=41516521 Â I am sure some enterprising fellow will sell a strip of black tape for $20 to mask over the Olympus logo. rosuna Posted May 15, 2012 Share #49 Â Posted May 15, 2012 Does anyone know if you can just use the Olympus branded EVF on the X2 and save the best part of 300 bucks? Â I think it is possible wattsy... and it is a good viewfinder. Â The image quality is not only dependent on resolution... The refresh rate is very important as well (but it depends on the sensor-to-viewfinder pipeline). Â These comments (comparing the viewfinders of the Olympus and the Sony NEX-7) are interesting: Â The Online Photographer: Olympus E-M5 First Notes (vs. NEX-7 and E-P3) Â . bocaburger Posted May 15, 2012 Share #50 Â Posted May 15, 2012 I have a genius suggestion for Leica to keep the price of the M10 down! Revert to a plastic LCD cover! They could then re-introduce it as a feature on an M10.2 and charge a hefty fee to upgrade M10s! Â Oh...wait...nevermind. Â Â
skinner Posted May 15, 2012 Share #51  Posted May 15, 2012 Let's have a sweepstake   I think the camera will be € 6950.-- I think the $ will be close to € 0.80 The USA markup will be $ 500.-- So the camera will be $ 8950.--  I don't think there will be a €  (just being mischievous)

tappan Posted May 15, 2012 Share #56 Â Posted May 15, 2012 I believe Jaap will be correct with the US price just under $9,000.00 I also think that we will see a "thumb rest" or thumb support like the Thumbs Up or Thumbie, permanently affixed. sblitz Posted May 15, 2012 Share #58 Â Posted May 15, 2012 perhaps this is all why the x2 wasn't much of an upgrade over the x1, the EVIL twin will take over demand and the m10 might not be called an m10 after all, xm or something to indicate its another line. all marketing in the end, but leica is simply broadening the offers while we here think in linear development. we will see soon enough.
