Whisperings in the wind - the price differential between M9P and M10 will be comparable to all other steps in the Digital M series [...500-800 Euros price jump]

Come the M10 I do wonder if you may be eating your words again, Jaap.

Judging by the increase in lens prices, the cost of the new mono m9 and 50 f2- added to leica's new boutique stores, and a camera with perhaps significantly better performance than the M9 as well as new features... sold alongside the M9... My guess is you will be lucky to get in the door with a cool 11K USD.:(

Let's have a sweepstake :)

I think the camera will be € 6950.--

I think the $ will be close to € 0.80

The USA markup will be $ 500.--

So the camera will be $ 8950.--

With a cashback/voucher programme for the M9P.

(caveat: all my own imagination)

As an afterthought the cost of lenses has increased dramatically. I bought the m macro set at the time I got the M8 for £ 1300, now about £2800, a MATE for £1700 and a WATE for about £1600 as an early adopter.looking on the bright side the second hand value is about the same as original purchase price.

I like cheese anyway jaap

Just remember the pleasure we all get from the kit.

It depends on what is the "M10" camera.

If it is a classical rangefinder camera, with optical viewfinder and rangefinder mechanism, the price will be higher than that of the M9, and Jaap's estimation may be correct.

If the so-called "M10" is a different thing... not a classical rangefinder but a different type of camera with M mount, then the price may be lower than the price of a M9. Something near of 3,000 euros.

We have to wait until Photokina starts to know what is the plan...

how is it leica gets away with introducing new technology at higher prices? the ipad3 has many improved features over the original ipad introduced a few years back and the nominal price hasn't changed -- meaning it has fallen against the overall cost of living. certain we can find examples in the camera world. i can understand lens prices rising, no computer chips, only glass ones and by hand manufacturing. yet they do, bless their red dot souls. i hope the m10 comes as rumored, saves me more money for a lens rather than an upgrade.

There are reasons; among them are 1) the fact that over the recent years, Apple has reduced standing inventory dramatically, just-in-time (JIT) supply has improved a lot. (I can get the figures if necessary.) 2) Apple has also reduced the number of suppliers for parts to each product - they really leaned on the manufactures in a manner that reminds me of Walmart. That means lowered costs for Apple, thus more profit per unit even at modest price increases. Given its modest scale of manufacturing, I suspect that Leica cannot do the exactly the same. 3) Leica is also bound to certain German laws while Apple's products are made in China where cheap prevails, especially in terms of labor. (For now, China also has the lion's share of rare earth materials which are used in lenses, among other things.)

Big differences.

Photokina 2012:

Imagine if you will, a M9.1 with new CCD sensor and associated electronics including LCD as the optical rangefinder M-camera line, otherwise much the same as the current M9, just up to date and improved.

And, alongside the M9 a new M10 with a purely EVF (no rangefinder) in the same spot as the current OVF and with a M and R mount, CMOS sensor and live view and video and gps and can opener and... Probably, smaller form factor but, room for a bigger battery.

Now, which would you choose? Both? Remember, you could pull that tired old line that, you got the M10 for your wife. :)

Weather sealing and easier use (framing and focus) with long lenses would save me $ on the need for a complementary DSLR system. I'd gladly pay Leica for the opportunity to stay light and minimalist.

Video has nothing to do with it for me.

A second on Jeff's point: I have no desire for video in a Leica M camera. From a business strategy standpoint, it would seem to make more sense for Leica to improve on the M9 in ways that appeal to us quirky and contrarian anachronisms, and to those like us who are curious about what a big fuss Leica has created since the introduction of the M8, than to chase the kinds of feature-focused gearheads that want the latest from Japan. There is a reason I abandoned my Nikon for an M7 a decade ago: there was a certain minimalist purity of form that was delivered by Leica. And that was before I understood what Leica lenses were all about!

I kind of hope those who are looking for electronic anything, and also video, take to these pages the day after Photkina and declare their disappointment, and how Leica doesn't get it. Some of us will smile.

My guess for UK is £5995. What I know for certain is that, unlike the Monochrom and (to a lesser extent) the APO 50, I will not be interested in it.
