andybarton Posted May 13, 2012 Author Share #21 Posted May 13, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Erm... it's working.... I owe you a pint, at least (Let's see whether it continues to do so, before celebrating too much ) I am pretty careful with the cutting of my negs, though. Maybe it's just "one of those things"
Advertisement Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Hi andybarton, Take a look here VERY bad news... Coolscan V on the blink - literally. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andym911 Posted May 13, 2012 Share #22 Posted May 13, 2012 great! sometimes it is just the simple things... best andy
DOUG66 Posted May 13, 2012 Share #23 Posted May 13, 2012 Hi Andy, Strip it down yourself, it is easy, clean the optics, remove clean and relubricate the leadscrew and nut, check and tighten all connections to the main pcb. These scanners are very prone to dust, mine was filthy. I have made a a dust cover from sheet plastic which covers the scanner when not in use, I suggest you do the same. Doug. DOUG66 Posted May 13, 2012 Share #24 Posted May 13, 2012 Andy, Just saw the other posts, delighted to hear that you got it working again. Doug.
Stealth3kpl Posted May 13, 2012 Share #25 Posted May 13, 2012 There's clearly activity around this device. Way to go if you can't get a fix. Imacon is SO expensive! This one went for a song compared to a Coolpix 9000. Good news is it, or an identicle one, has been relisted. Pete
philipus Posted May 13, 2012 Share #26 Posted May 13, 2012 Really sorry to hear this Andy. I hope Nikon can fix it or that it's a simple matter of cleaning it. Just the other week I was surprised to find a used V in a shop window here in town for sub-500€, a pretty incredible price for a unit in good working order. It was gone within a few days. So they do pop up but one has to be quick. I dread the day my V dies. It's turning ten in a year or so...
peterbengtson Posted May 14, 2012 Share #27 Posted May 14, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) While I have not done controlled tests, I own and have used the Nikon 4000, 5000 and the Epson V750. Scans of the same b&w negative made on the V750 seem to be better and this is what I use now for everything. I am told that the V750 has an additional lens for smaller negatives. I have used it for everything from half frame (Pen F) 35mm to antique 5x7 glass plates including broken shards of plates. Highly recommended if you can afford it. wattsy Posted May 15, 2012 Share #28 Posted May 15, 2012 Imacon is SO expensive! They are to buy but not to rent. Calumet (and a few others) rent them by the hour.
Phil U Posted May 15, 2012 Share #29 Posted May 15, 2012 They are to buy but not to rent. Calumet (and a few others) rent them by the hour. Any idea on the cost per hour?
andybarton Posted May 15, 2012 Author Share #30 Posted May 15, 2012 How many hours would you need to learn how to use the thing?
erl Posted May 15, 2012 Share #31 Posted May 15, 2012 this happened to me also some time ago.... it was solved after I trimmed the neg more squarely at the end.... seriously, this did also work for me. Worth trying! Andy try a different neg..just to check its not a simple thing...good luck andy If your neg is curled, say from overdrying, it can upset the scanner. Try an alternative software package. If you are using NikonScan, try VueScan, or vice verca. I also had success with such a swap. Can't really be explained, but then, what can with technology? Good luck, whatever.
andybarton Posted May 15, 2012 Author Share #32 Posted May 15, 2012 It did seem to have solved itself on Sunday, but I will see what happens going forward. NikonScan is no longer an option, of course
andybarton Posted May 15, 2012 Author Share #33 Posted May 15, 2012 I have just spoken with Nikon UK. "There is very little that can't be repaired" in their scanners, which are still being serviced by them. They will send a Freepost label to allow its return.
erl Posted May 15, 2012 Share #34 Posted May 15, 2012 That's good news. Not sure what you meant about the 'NikonScan' not being an option. If you need a copy I can supply. Personally, I prefer VueScan.

Personally, I prefer VueScan. NikonScan doesn't work with OSX Lion - but thanks anyway I moved to Vuescan years ago and have never wanted for any other scanning software, despite having EpsonScan, NikonScan and even Silverfast for both the V5 and the V700
honcho Posted May 15, 2012 Share #36 Posted May 15, 2012 ...... Imacon is SO expensive! But worth every penny for a hybrid workflow. Good to see that Nikon can still offer support and repairs, though.
wattsy Posted May 15, 2012 Share #37 Posted May 15, 2012 Any idea on the cost per hour? About £50 if I remember correctly. I've never tried them but Photofusion in Brixton have cheaper rates.

leicamann Posted May 16, 2012 Share #39 Posted May 16, 2012 Andy sorry to hear about that, have you considered an "alternative replacement" down the line somewhere? Cheers, JRM
andybarton Posted May 16, 2012 Author Share #40 Posted May 16, 2012 It's difficult to plan when the market is a declining one. Who knows what will be available in the future?
