R = Retired

LOLOLOL :p

Optimists say, "R will be ... RESURRECTED, REVIVED, REJUVENATED ... REDEEMED with a new body" :)

... imagine the 280/4 Apo-Telyt on the new camera ;) ... maybe those who were evaluating the M9 M are now testing the new EVF solution?

The Medium format could be doomed, watching a comparison between a Hussleblad and the Nikon 800 on U-Tube is that the results is so close that it must be a worry for Hussleblad.

So when it's on YouTube it must be true. Is that the new world we are living in? This is sad beyond comprehension.

Yes it's sad when comparing a 40,000$ and a 3,000$ Digital camera, actaually it's embarrassing.

Please check out the D800 vs Medium Format with Roth and Ramberg on U- tube.

It's obvious you still think that the Leica S system has a future, Thank goodness I hav'nt bought one....Lol.

If I correctly recall various top Leica people's interviews and/or articles, they never said they are not working towards a digital solution for the R lens owners. Their words summarize like an EVF body with the X-line sensor and adapters for R and M lenses. What they did say, though, was that the project is still in the stage of development.

I am intending to hold on my R lenses for a bit longer; in fact, I keep an eye open for the 21-35mm ASPH, to compensate for the expected 1.5X-factor sensor.

I now use this lens on my Canon DSLR with a crop factor of 33 to 56mm which is perfect as my standard

lens, and the results are terrific.

A couple of weeks ago I took some shots with (21-35mm) attached to the 600D and compared it to the Images I took with a borrowed M9P fitted with the 50mm 1.4 ASPH, (this lens I bought) and to my surprise.

I won't mention it here as it will only cause heartache.....Lol.

As I reported more than a year go in the thread “The R solution - more details”, according to Leica product manager Stephan Daniel speaking in October 2010, the planned R replacement was at that time largely at the concept stage, and he warned that we should not expect it to be shown at Photokina 2012. From his remarks, I as left with the impression that Leica was waiting for electronic viewfinder (EV) technology to improve to the point that would make the project viable.

So unless Leica’s thinking has altered since that interview, it seems unlikely that the reported EV camera anticipated at Photokina represents the long-awaited ‘R solution’.

Best regards,

Doug

Couldn't they just "shrink" the S2 and put an R mount on it? The R solution doesn't have to be a D800 or 5DIII competitor with all of the features of those other cameras. It could just be a simple but high quality full-frame DSLR, something like a Leica version of the original 5D (which had no video). Introducing a crop-factor EVF camera for the R system is an R solution, but not very R-like.

The main problem is that a camera like that, which I also would like to have, probably would cost about the same as S2.

Furthermore, Leica has apparently not the capacity to produce such a camera-body either.

I think if you look at this from a financial perspective, the last thing Leica wants to do is make a camera for lenses that are already in the hands of users with no new lenses to sell them. So why would they take a risk of launching a new system when they can't make enough M lenses to meet demand? I expect the R solution is Leica taking so long that R owners go away. That is not to say that someday Leica won't have a full frame or smaller EVF camera that can accept R lenses via an adapter.
