Robinyuill Posted May 10, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there. Just a question about a lens/camera that I am thinking of buying. I have read that there are lots of variations but just to give me some confidence in the kit. The camera is a 3F red dial with a delay action, serial number 792795 indicates 1955. The lens is an Elmar 5cm f3.5 serial number 1322716, 1955 which should look like a type 3. The lens looks like a type 2 though. Is this just part of normal variations in production? Thanks for any information. Regards Robin.

luigi bertolotti Posted May 10, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 10, 2012 The Elmar 5cm had many variations in the years after World War II... can you post some picture of yours, with all the engravings well clear ?
earleygallery Posted May 10, 2012 Share #3 Posted May 10, 2012 By 'type 2' do you mean Red Scale (should be easy to determine, it should have a red scale!). What's a type 3?
luigi bertolotti Posted May 10, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 10, 2012 There are the "red scale", the "triangle", the "diamond". the "f 22", the "expanded scale"... really a lot of... (and of course the REAL last version - styled like the 2,8 version - apparently made in BM only but, as JC says, "exceptions are the rule"...) lars_bergquist Posted May 10, 2012 Share #5 Posted May 10, 2012 The serial numbers are OK. And if the camera and lens themselves are physically OK, why should you not have confidence in them? It's a nice and nostalgic combo – the ultimate in LTM, unless you count the IIIg, which some people don't count. I do. You should understand that with the manual batch production system that Leica have always used, minor changes in parts are easy to do, and they have often been done in order to facilitate parts manufacture or assembly. The list of known changes in the M3 during its lifetime is as long as my arm, for instance. Some of them were of interest to the user, most were not. Robinyuill Posted May 10, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted May 10, 2012 Thanks for the rapid replies. It is not a lack of confidence in the authenticity, I am buying from a very reliable shop in Edinburgh. I just like to know more about the items and when I look up items on the wiki page here, sometimes a question comes to mind. I realise that there a lots of variations in production and I was just curious. I appreciate the tremendous knowledge that is available on this forum from all the more experienced members and love the information that is given freely. Hope the image has attached ok. luigi bertolotti Posted May 11, 2012 Share #7 Posted May 11, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's OK... one of the last Elmars in screw mount, DOF scale in red, triangle-shaped reference for focus, f stops to f22... I can't read the s/n (ought to be engraved onto the black front rim) but you say that it's 1.322.xxx and this matches with the above details... just for comparision, see this almost identical item (scale in feet instead of meters) - same age about - currently for sale in Italy : Newoldcamera - Scheda prodotto
Robinyuill Posted May 13, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted May 13, 2012 Once again thanks for the info. I have a bad case of 'gas' anyway so I just got it and am now eagerly waiting for the film to come back from Peak Image. Really must stop acquiring stuff, wife is beginning to get suspicious! Regards to you all, Robin.
