Tulip Octet

These represent the last of our tulips, this is the longest spring flower season we've had..ever. Long time residents of Vancouver do not remember a spring so cool, wet and late. We still have daffodils and narcissus blooming..in MAY!!

The late Triumph tulips represent some of the most sublime colours and of course botanical finesse from Florissa of Holland, though it must be kept in mind, they are not the developers of these strains ,but the buyers. My former boss was a tulip bulb grower, it is extremely competitive and cut throat. You cannot be cautious enough as a grower when buying your seed stock. My bosses Dad, bought some seed stock that was cheaper, but had been infected with a root fungus( unbeknownst to them) the following year, the crop failed and 21 years of hard work evaporated, it was a heartbreaking experience and finalized my bosses decision to move to Canada.

The good news is I learned to appreciate the craft and the finer points of bulb growing and the beauty of these flowers that were brought from Turkey some 850 years ago to Europe.

Enjoy and thanks for looking

Thanks Iduna.. and yes that took some very akward positioning, the idea is to select out of the chaos and profusion something that "reads" , front to back and of course what drew you to the scene in the first place.

Thanks for your comment

Thanks Caryl, use indeed this particular variety is actually quite rare, so is the colour.

To me this display showed a degree of maturity and sophistication with the Master Gardener at the UEL( University Endowment Lands)

The displays at Stanley Park were also exceptional this year, so that tells me that both the talent and the funding are ongoing, so hey you never know we might start developing some culture here in Vancouver BC ;)

Cheers, JRM
