Hope this question is in the correct section and it's maybe been asked before but here goes. I have seen a Summaron 35mm f3.5 with the M3 specs. If you do not want to use the eyes you can still focus by estimating the distance and setting the scale on the lens, but not by using the rangefinder. The goggles can only be removed with the lens locked at infinity, so quite apart from the fact that it would be inaccurate without the goggles, it cannot even be turned to focus without them, so scale focussing is impossible as well, unless the mechanism has been forced, which has been known to happen by inexpert use.  If you do not want to use the eyes you can still focus by estimating the distance and setting the scale on the lens, but not by using the rangefinder. Then one can turn the lens at will. If it locks again at infinity, then push the button again. I say 'button', it is more like a little BB, if that makes sense. With a camera without a preview lever you either must get an auxilliary finder or use the camera a lot to learn by experience where your framing is relative to the other frames in the camera. To unlock it you must push both the lens tab button and the little ball on top in the goggles slide and turn the focussing ring of course. - It will lock again as soon as the lens gets turned to infinity and you will have to go through the double unlocking procedure again. And, as you say, you have to push the frameline lever to get correct framing. And the focussing is completely off without the goggles. Believe me, I just checked with my example. The lens works perfectly fine on any M camera if used as intended with the goggles (except the CL) so why on earth would you want to use it without?:confused: Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The only reason I asked about use without the goggles was I thought they were fitted to enable using the 35mm lens on an M3 which does not have the frame lines I believe. I thought the lens would be smaller to carry about without the goggles. Thanks and I will save up a bit more to get a different lens. Regards to you all. Robin.
