holy crap this Einst_Stein troll is all over the forum...

STOP FEEDING THE "CLUMSY" TROLL!

This is no worse than the D800 comparison or the M10 wish lists... At least the OP has a sense of humor, even if it seems he has never actually used his camera, just decorated it...

Stacked magnifiers ? That must darken your viewfinder considerably not to mention loss of contrast. How do you manage to focus? I can imagine it helps composing as the field of the frame lines is rather small, but would it not be more practical to use a 135 accessory viewfinder? Personally I get the best focus hit rate with just a diopter. (I need 1.25, so 1.0 and 1.5 are equally effective). A soft release will increase camera shake at slow speeds, see the proper technique in the M9 FAQ. Good point about the accessory viewfinders. Half-case? The camera is more than thick enough without. If only it were possible to reduce it to film M thickness...

Nobody will ridicule you for accessories as they are fine for those that like to use them. Just don”t declare them must-have ;)

Stacked magnifiers are used outdoors in daylight, darkened viewfinder is therefore not an issue, perhaps indoors in low light it would. The magnification allows precise focus that pops clearly at a single focus point. In addition I use the 135mm accessory viewfinder for the stated reason.

re: camera thickness, the half case feels right to me or I have become accustomed to it, the Leica version is not contoured precisely on the back and its protrusion provides a good perch for my thumb.

These accessories give me a sharper/higher IQ not must haves.

This is the Leica Ethos, sometimes even spoken out: All that is needed, nothing unneccessary. And I am all for it. It is in fact part of my style.

For most of the nearly sixty years that I have been taking pictures, cameras had, at best, only three operating controls. Both fewer and more was a sign of lower quality:

• A shutter speed dial.

• An aperture ring.

• A film transport knob or lever, which also cocked the shutter.

There was no DIN/ASA dial either, because there was no built-in meter. And when it appeared, you set it only if you had put in a film of a different speed. And if these three controls worked properly and were reasonably accessible, all was well and you could hand them over to your subconscious and start taking pictures. And that I did.

There were people like the OP in those days too. But, hey, most cameras didn't even have interchangeable lenses! So those who wanted to pimp their Rolleiflexes or whatever did it with an assortment of colour filters in little leather cases along the carrying strap: Yellow-green, dark green, red ...

So, being a dyed-in-the-wool reactionary in these things, I do hereby declare and proclaim that a Leica M9 needs only the following accessories:

• A comfortable strap (Domke snapless is recommended).

• An extra battery.

• A half-case to protect the rear monitor when you carry the camera by the strap (pace Jaap).

All else is unnecessary. When travelling, you may of course need more batteries and cards, a charger and the like. But that is external to the camera. I do not count the incident light meter; I always used one ever since they became generally affordable in the late 1950's. My first one was a jewel-like Gossen Sixtomat. But again, that was external to the camera.

The sight of a pimped M, fortunately rare, brings to my inner self a slight sardonic smile, like the sight of a person in a shirt of an unfortunate colour. So now you know.

Re halfcase, Lars, if that is the main function a simple screen protector will do, or in the case of an M9P the screen is unscratchable anyway. Do people wear protectors or half-cases on their watches btw? ;)

First and foremost good eyesight and a healthy bank balance.

And then seriously folks one of these

Thumbie

I started off with the thumbs-up but have changed to these as they leave the hot shoe free

and one of these

Artisan&Artist* Straps

After a few days they become nice and soft (would recommend the shorter version)

and one of these

Soft release for M - cameras

like because it comes in black or chrome and is fairly large and flat

I think the thumbie would be especial useful for people who hold the M9 mainly with the right hand. If you have the habit to hold it with both hands, it could be less compelling.

I'm sure a shopkeeper would be kind enough to help you learn how to hold a Leica M camera and keep you from feeling clumsy.

In the meantime, here are a couple of hints to think about:

1) the shutter release is on the top right hand side (think about your right hand)

2) the base plate is completely flat (think about your left palm; especially when using low shutter speeds)

3) there are focusing tabs on many models of lenses (think about why)

4) the lens diameters are small enough to easily wrap a thumb and index finger around them (think about what that might mean)

5) before digital, the film M had a film advance and shutter cocking lever that was on the top right hand side along with the shutter release (think about why the Thumbs Up and Thumbie might seem appropriate for some people)

If Brad Pitt can do it, you probably can too ;)

Yes, they do. It’s common in the real military as well as the fantasy military worlds. Google leather watch covers.

Every scratch, shutter actuation, fingerprint, dust particle, lowers the resale value.

Every scratch, shutter actuation, fingerprint, dust particle, increases overall enjoyment.

It depends which one, one subscribes to.

One of those little card gizmos you stick in the bottom.

A battery helps too.

Rip, you are referring to the Essential Must Have M9 Accessories, of course. The OP was asking about the Must Have M9 Accessories.

Let me explain; when you go out of the house you need a shirt and trousers. These are the Essentials, the underwear is an Accessory. :)
