I have added a new page to the Leica M9 article about not just the M10 but also about where Leica might be heading.

I like your article. It gives me the feeling, that you know something, that you aren't allowed to tell us.;). But you are very anxious to do so. Am I right?

Frankly, I do not poses special insider-knowlednge, and when I do, I don't tell. The only insider knowledge I share is that the M10 is not coming May 10. And some times I'm not even sure, except I am sure, but then again ... I may not have gotten the correct info :D

Only thing certain is there will be one or two more waiting lists to be on from May 10 and that the coming years will be exiting times ...

You say that Leica chose not to listen to their customers. I just worry about who they are listening to.

Their PE strategy of volume sales is clearly at odds with the 'luxury' brand referred to in your article. I thought the Hermes days were over.

Hmmmm

I wonder why you are ruling out the announcement of M10 on May 10. M9 itself is almost three years old (M9-P was just a cosmetic change on M9 after all). Unless you know something!

EDIT. I just saw your reply re M10.

Super Photos Thorsten..... as usual !

I have to say I think it's mainly the lenses and the guy pressing the shutter that's the critical factor here......

There's not much Leica could do to an M9 that would improve the resultant images by enough to make it noticeable...... or the system easier to use or more reliable....

We'll all be daft enough to buy whatever new gear is produced though......

Thorsten I have only started to read your new article and look forward to more. I just wanted to make a comment that you have made a SPLENDID portrait of Peter Karbe. That should be permanently and prominently on display wherever Leica enthusiasts gather.

Customers' desires are shaped by what is currently available to them. So the customers tell you that they want just the same thing, thank you, but with some extras.

This is devastating. Nikon, Canon listen to their customers – and in the age of micro-electronics, 'extras' are a dime a dozen. When all external space is occupied by buttons, just extend a menu and put in some more 'features'. The result is here for all to see.

Now if Oskar Barnack and Ernst Leitz II had listened to their customers, what would they have given them? A VP roll film folding camera in 3x4 or 4x4cm format. Probably a superbly made one. But they would not have changed the course of photography.

Can the Leica crew save what is precious to us – the straightforwardness, the concentration on the essentials, the Leica way – and still change the course of photography? I think they can. Maybe I am too old to jump on an entirely new train, but who knows? Depends on the train.

A very interesting read as usual. Thank you!

There is a typo in the caption of the photo of Henri Cartier Bresson that I think you should correct. You’ve credited the photo to a Jane Brown. It should, of course, be Jane Bown.

Great article, wonderful pics - but our responses say it all, some would be horrified if you could get some form of focus confirmation in an M, others would relish it, which in a way says it all, Menu options, me I'd like to to tether my decrepit old M8 and tune pics live - but to me its really about the luxury of choice, you get too much unnecessary stuff with most cameras, but when you have to grab an old DSLR for the grand children's Easter egg hunt, you realise that luxury or no a Leica M with a 90mm lens just isn't going to be competitive - but a little flashing/highlighted etc section of the view finder with such limited dof would make an old bloke like me forget about alternatives like the slow focussing Fuji x pro 1 - with its bonus low light advantage.

Well, I think and hope we get both. Meaning a classic M10, perhaps with focus-confirmation and similar hidden features, and then an advanced edition M10 or mini-M10 with digital viewfinder and such.

Who knows, perhaps Leica at some point in the future would also provide a FAST camera with smaller files and a SLOW camera with higher files. Like Nikon has done with the D3 series where you must choose between speed and image quality/size.

But everything in ONE camera, I don't believe it would happen.
