New Leica Cameras = New Forum Sections?

Recommended Posts

With the distinct possibility that there will be several new cameras announced next month I suppose the idea of introducing new sub-Forums for the M10, X2, MP-B or whatever they will be called, is being, or will be, considered by Andreas and or others. I would like to offer a suggestion.

Instead of fracturing the forum into many sub-groups I would recommend the following:

News:

About:

Customer Forum:

Lens Forum: M Mount Lenses, S Mount Lenses, Other

Digital Forum: M Digital, S Digital, Other

Film Forum:

and all the others...

Or how about these sections

  • Understand the Leica mystique forum
  • The Leica film forum
  • The Leica rangefinder forum
  • The Leica SLR forum
  • The Leica lens forum
  • The Leica 'less than full-frame' forum
  • The Leica collectors forum
  • The Leica accessories forum
  • The Leica 'I am not sure which forum' forum

Ramchand, my motivation in suggesting the groups was to try to bring as many of us with germane issues together, rather than fracturing into numerous sub-groups. For instance I believe the M8 and M9 forums should be combined, as they are actually very similar cameras. Likewise if the M10 (or whatever the next M is called) has at least a passing similarity to it's predecessors then it should also be included in the broad group "M Digital".

I do however feel that the Customer Forum has enough to discuss without being buried in lens discussion threads, which I feel make up, if not a majority, then certainly a very large number of posts. This is why I would like to see it separated. I believe this would also help the moderators, who seem to be constantly moving lens threads out of the M8 and M9 forums.

If a new EVIL is introduced, say the X2 or E1 or whatever, then that would certainly be something new, and as such would benefit from a dedicated site in the "Digital" and "Lens" sections.

Shouldn't we wait and see if and which new cameras will be introduced. This is a Photokina year too. If I were Andreas (which not ;)) I would only add a few subforums as needed and start thinking about restructuring the forum to fit the new palette after October, if at all.

Just think of the hassle of shuffling everything around to keep the content organized and accessible!

Indeed!

Agree with Jaap, although the one thing that I think we have really been missing for some time is a consolidated lens forum. Other than that, too much fragmentation leads as we have seen to tribalism and that is never ever healthy.

That way leads to madness...

Lenses

M Digital

S Digital

Others

The simpler the better. Otherwise we will end up with 200 sub forums, including the ever popular "M9-P with custom script and brown leather covering forum".

It's silly to split the M8 and M9 crowds.

It wasn't at the time the M9 sub-forum was created.

Part f the problem is that all these sub-forums are fully Googled, so changing them will lead to people not being able to find them

Google is pretty good at reindexing their search engine, that's what they do.

After all, isn't the forum primarily here for the benefit of the members who know where the site is and how to search it, and not just a vehicle to land visitors from search engines?

I do think simpler, in this case, is better. Possibly a compromise that is acceptable to most would be a digital forum that includes all and contains a selectible filter option. That on a practical level would, of course, require categorizing each thread as M8, M9, S2, etc, etc. ron

I have to chuckle at how these things go around in circles and resurface from time to time.

Remember the lead up to the M9 introduction? M8 users were fed up with endless M9 rumour threads clogging up the forum and just about everyone seemed to be fed up with threads like this one, where different ideas as to how the forum should be restructured were aired ad nauseum. All of which eventually led to the creation of the M9 sub forum of course.

During that process though it was sometimes forgotten that LUF is Andreas' baby and that, ultimately, it's structure is up to him.

And it won’t stop. When the M8 was introduced it was the only digital M. Three years later there was the M9. Another three years and now there may be an M10 introduced some time this year. Is it going to be practical to continue introducing a section for each digital M? And should it be a concern that Google might take a few days until its index is adjusted to the new forum structure? Unless Leica stops introducing new camera models, the existing structure requires introducing new sections for each. The structure is bound to change; that much is inevitable. The question is whether it should change with each major new model or whether it could change just once so it would be more stable across future additions to Leica’s product range.

During that process though it was sometimes forgotten that LUF is Andreas' baby and that, ultimately, it's structure is up to him.

Indeed. We can only offer suggestions. The M10 isn’t announced just yet and it may not be announced on the 10th of May either, so there is ample time to consider such suggestions.

I think all the sections should be merged into just 1 called "Leica" (including the photo forums, Barnacks bar etc.). That will force some of us to see what their new toy is supposed to be used for. Others will get educated on politics, science, artistic merits of WE pics etc.

If it ain't broke don't 'fix' it.

Stephen (Seafurydriver), I understand your desire for simplicity of structure but it's a double edged sword. For example if the M8, M9, and Mn sub forums were to be conglomerated into one M digital forum then M8, M9 users, and Mn users would each complain about having to wade through countless thread of no interest to them just to find any threads that might be.

It happened with the Digilux 2 that was lumped into the Digital subforum along with the Digilux, Digilux 1, Digilux 3, the C-Lux models, the D-Lux models, the V-Lux models and others I've forgotten. There have been constant calls for a separate Digilux 2 subforum so the reverse to your wish is also wanted by others.:o

Pete.

Steve, I think you're right on!

I also had post with some new ideas for the forum earlier this year, but had very little response. I think the forum does need renewal and revision, if not a radical overhaul. Already it is looking outdated, and members will move on if they don't find it stimulating enough.

A lens forum is obvious and there have been numerous calls for one.

"Digital" now looks outmoded. Digital M perhaps?

And how about a Leica compact sub-forum?

These would just really be tweaks. Perhaps what's needed at this stage is a poll?
